Tip: Use an Allen Wrench or Key for Torx Screws

10/28/2009 9:21 AM

I realize this forum is not Popular Mechanics, but thought this would be of interest. Working around the house or car I keep running into these fasteners. Have a few of these "Torx" screwdrivers, but sometimes not the proper size. Found that an allen wrench fits these quite well and I happen to have a bigger selection of allen wrenches than Torx screwdrivers. Maybe this idea will get some fellow CR4 out of jam or trip to store.

The annoying thing about some Torx fasteners is the small pip in the middle that prevents a hexagon wrench being inserted into them by way of a substitute for the proper tool.

While the pip can, of course, be broken out in favour of a hexagon wrench, a few coins spent at the local DIY supermarket will produce a set of hexagon-shanked bits that will fit in the magnetic spindle that goes into any battery-powered drill/screwdriver.

Meanie.

Those screws with the little 'pip' in the center of the drive socket are called 'Pinhead' screws, as in Pinhead Torx. In photo of tip set, you can also see Pinhead Allen drivers, as well as 'Snake-Eye' drivers.

These are widely used as tamper-resistant fasteners in the door biz. For a long time, the drivers were pretty difficult to find, but you can now pick them up at any auto parts store.

As far as breaking the pin out, screws intended to be truly tamper resistant are stainless steel material, and all you will do is bend the pin over, rendering it difficult to remove the screw without a destructive technique (like drilling her out).

GA from me.

Why screw about using the wrong tool that will damage the screw anyway, at least the ones that don't have the "pip"....

Its always best to have the correct tools......

Allen keys are handy if you're really stuck for a special, but I got this set of ¼" hex drive security bits for £1 (at the Pound shop!).

Pretty poor quality, but good for occasional use - especially as they cover a good range of Torx & pip and hex & pip.

Always use the proper tool for the job. Besides, I use times like this to go out and buy more tools. I mean, who doesn't need more tools?

I just realized that's what my wife says about shoes...........
