Strong, Effective, Transparent Bonds

10/29/2009 3:02 PM

I am looking for the most effective completely transparent, weatherproof bond as an adhesive for glass to glass surfaces. Any visible clouding or smudging would obviously ruin the finished product. Any suggestions?

cyanoacrylates, maybe.

Try here: Cyanoacrylate Instant Adhesives

There are also water clear epoxies that might work.

Good luck!

When I was doing a lot of SCUBA diving, I needed to cement glass lenses to my glass diving mask window for optical correction. I wound up using a clear silicone rubber adhesive with a primer. Worked perfectly.

Loctite makes a one-part acrylic adhesive (UV 357) that has a refractive index virtually identical to glass. It is used to repair cracked windshields and assemble compound lens assemblies.

Norland products is another.

Dunno, but I bet loctite has one that would work for that too, for the assembly of polycarbonate lens assemblies.

It was a hour or two ago, but it has slacked up quite a bit. Had to go get the kiddo at her friends house around 7:30 this evening and the streets were already starting to flood. Houston is only about 10-30 feet above sea level so our streets are our detention ponds for all intents and purposes, so street flooding is normal around here. the house is a good three feet above the street level so it would take one heluva rain to flood this house. but some houses in the back side of the subdivision along the creek flood the first floor at the drop of a hat. I'm really surprised they haven't taken FEMA buyout offers to tell the truth. a lot of other homeowners along the creek have years ago.

2 part acrylic adhesives give a clear bond with Perspex sheet, never tried it with glass. What about Loctite Glass Bond? sounds like it should be made for the job.

What is the finished product?

Weatherproof implies that you might have wide ranges of temperature swings that could poosibly cause a rigid bond to fail over time due to the different rates of expansion and contraction between the bond material and the glass.

Some materials have a tendency to wick water over time and cause the clouding or delamination of the parts.

UV stability would also be a concern over time many products will yellow and break down.

A flexible bond (lamination) might be the answer.

2 part polyurethane based Safety Plus 2 manufactured by Glasslam NGI Pompano Fla is absolutly clear and suitable for exposed wet edge conditions. It will not yellow over time or break down do to UV exposure.
