Relaxation of Residual Stresses?

01/08/2007 5:58 AM

Hello!

I have a question and please help me to make it clear to myself. Supposing i have a welded aluminium alloy sheet and i want to cut specimens to transverse direction of the seam, what would happen with the residual stresses? It is possible i have relaxation of the residual stresses?

With AC Tig butt weld--you will not get any Relaxation due to Residual Stresses.

No, absolutely, you still have those stresses, because of the geometry of your weld and the direction the metal solidification and cooling occurs. Its always in the direction of the center of weld to the plate and, if the plate is long enough, it can be treated as the "infinite plate" approach.
