Neutral connection in LV switchboard

11/07/2009 11:11 PM

I am in a LV switchboard Manuf. organisation. I want to know what happens if Neutral for individual feeder is not offered with disconnected type Neutral link. Also if commen Neutral is given for no.of outgoing feeder then is it safe or any disadvantages?

Thanks for the interest you have shown. My reply pointwise is as below

1) LV=low voltage i.e.415 Volt TPN system(3phase & Neutral system)

2)for TPN outgoing feeder, phase get isolated due to ON/OFF operation of Power switch but Neutral doesnot get if power switch is TP. In this condition neutral can be isolated by giving isolable type Neutral link. But If such arragement is not given then Neutral will not get isolated. So my question is how safe is not to isolate Neutral.

3) I want to check how safe is not to shroud Neutral bar,.What will happen if accidently someone toches Neutral bar.

Hope I clarifies all your doubts

asdabh,

Measure between Neutral and earth ground.

If Neutral is earth grounded there should be no problem. If not, shroud it all.

Or shroud it all and don't worry about the difference. It may cost a little more but the cost is outweighed by safety.

What you suggest is usually safest - and using a single standard might even work out as cheap as having some of each type. But... there are situations when it is preferably not to earth neutral. This could be because ground currents could become higher than local geological conditions would permit, or because of the effect on upstream RCDs. Whether such things are allowed will depend on your jurisdiction.

Isolable neutral is only with a maintenance angle. Nothing would happen even if neutral is not isolable and is a solid link in the TPN Switch. Also, you can distribute the neutral for many outgoing feeders from the main neutral bus. (Even when you offer neutral with an isolating link, the same thing happens. Isn't it?) But, only make sure that the neutral bus is capable of carrying the aggregate neutral currents from all the feeders.

But, the neutral should be solidly grounde at the source.
