Simple overwind protection for Constant Force Spring

11/08/2009 11:52 AM

Can I use the attachments of the ends of a constant force spring as overwind protection? I am using a small (1 in-lb) 100" long constant force spring and I am trying to avoid the complexity of using a string on a spool to avoid overwinding the spring. Althouhg the typical specs for a constant force spring say to leave 1 1/2 turns on the storage and output spools, do some engineers use the end connections of the spring as the overwind protection? The spring is being used to propel a spinning wheel in a piece of wall art. Thanks for any help for the newbie :-)

If the spring is pulled out repeatedly so that it unwinds fully and pulls on its attachment to the spool, the flexure of the spring at that point may result in fatigue.
