Requirement of Grounding of Cable Glands within SS JB using a wire

11/14/2009 2:02 AM

With reference to the picture pasted below, i want to know if the grounding of the Cable Glands with each other through the wires is necessary ??? because the Glands itself are already in contact with the JB body, therefore logically speaking they don't need to be connected together for grounding. Is this a standard practice ?? if yes then to which standard can i refer to for this installation ???

cable glands are not grounded. since cable generally passes through shrout so its isolated always with glands. more over glands are always in touch with junction box/panel' body.

So this is not a standard practice according to BS and IEC.

British Standard state and i quote,

"ARMORED CABLES SHOULD BE GLANDED USING DOUBLE SEAL BRASS COMPRESSION GLANDS WITH INTEGRAL EARTH OR BRASS EARH TAGS"

Please note that my scenario is an Ammonia Plant (Hazardous Area).

If i assume that in every case the gland body is in ground with the JB Body, then what is the point of the integral earh for glands???

Furthermore, this is IP66 case and the Junction Box is an Ex type because of the hazardous area classification, so any guidelines in this regard in any standard ?

It depends upon the location of the box in relation to the location of the hazardous area and the method of explosion prevention employed.

Dear Usman Nazar,

First u have to identify control and signal cable then ensure panel is earthed with electrical earthing and then ensure electronic earthing (instrumentation earthing) have taken inside the panel. Provide electronic earthing for the instruments, electronic cards, regulated power supplies, mother board etc at any one end individually (panel side or field side).Do not short electrical and electronic earthing.

So now no need of gland earthing loop. All the best

Hi,

The armour is serving as the continuity path for grounding from JB to Panel , its not the gland that is grounded

You may ref BS 6121 Series for more info

However it seems from the snap that the trunk & Spur side is not armored

Regards

Jose

In practice grounding of cable glands is not necessary. Cable glands is to support the cables that hook up in the metal panel frame/s to ensure stability to avoid moving or loose of terminals due to any means like vibration cause by mechanical loads nearby, careless maintenance personnel , etc and to avoid electrical sparks when circuit is energized. Cable glands of course is in contact with the body frames of the metal panel but not in the live parts of the circuit. So since the cable glands is bonded to the frames thru bolts/screw make sure that electrical equipment or panel board/s are bonded together to the grouding electrode cable/s directly to the grounding/eart pit. All neutral shall be insulated to avoid current leakage to the pane/s. The armored of the cable (SWA/STA) can be used as path continuity but not highly recommeded by most electrical parctitioners to be used as a grounding system to interconnect into the grounding grid.
