How To Build Bridge From NYC To London?

11/16/2009 12:01 AM

My quextion is of great demanded importance!

:Please, Please, Please help me satisfy the demands of my ageless heart.

Cold water that is deep is hard to build a bridge in.

Still I must design a bridge from New York to London, if I am to get some lunch.

I am really really starving for a pastrami sandwish delivered by a pretty girl on a bicycle.

Does you have some Carban Nanobutt tubes for maybe a strenght flyhoveer craft thingy that could stand it lyying down?

p.s. horrible ugly assigned ugly evil terribel instructor demanded we lye down and gave us only three days to give him the soulution, that is obviously not possible if nothing is to be disturbed or hit by icebergs and toads whose faces and bodies will be deformed by the rust and stuff. I myself thing a half weihted sumbmarine tunnedel wuud be better. However the very ugly and terrible nostructor will give me a bad grade if I don't suckceed in giving hm what he wants.

Agan glorios gures please help! I want a sandwich.

1) Wait until continental drift reverts.

2) Build a 500-ft bridge (Don't forget to include a bikeway for that girl).

3) Have your sandwich.

  1. Link several thousand ULCCs together end to end.
  2. Demolish their superstructures.
  3. Construct bridge on top of ULCCs.
  4. Inform your instructor that since he asked a stupid question, it's only natural that you give him a stupid answer.

1. Build several thousand large refrigeration units.

2. Tow the units out to sea and disperse them evenly between NYC and the UK.

3. Use the units to create a series of artificial iceburgs. Anchor each to the sea floor.

4. Build flexible bridge spanning from iceburg to iceburg.

Get the Geonosians to construct the bridge. If they can construct something as huge as the Death Star, a bridge across the entire North Atlantic should be a piece of cake for them.

As I recall, their designs had a few critical flaws.

A thermal exhaust port straight to the reactor system? With just ray shielding? Seriously?

Don't know about you, but I don't want to cross a bridge that could explode just because some daft seabird flies into an overlooked hole somewhere and lays an egg.

And your bridge would be nuclear-powered because.....?

It's going to take a lot of electricity to power all the burger joints along the bridge.

It'll be easier to generate that on site. Anybody's grandma can build a transatlantic bridge powered by the bobbing motion of the segments. But a nuclear one? Way cooler.

Besides, you can't run the Super Laser off a portable 1000W two-stroke generator.

And you want to install a super laser cannon on the bridge to do what exactly?

Ummm...

To crush the Rebel Alliance once and for all? Or maybe to...destroy threatening asteroids?

Look, the important thing here isn't why we need it. Just that we do. And it makes perfect sense to mount it along the bridge. I think. At least it did a minute ago.

Besides, with freezing seawater for cooling we won't even need exhaust ports. Which brings us full circle.

Given the complete design spec mentioned on CR4 "I must design a bridge from New York to London", there is rather a limited amount of information.

Building a bridge over deep water in the middle of the ocean is tricky, but long bridges over shallower water are possible using standard techniques and technology.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_longest_bridges_in_the_world

I would look at land route from New York thru north eastern Canada, from there a short bridge to Greenland, across Greenland (inland) to the east coast, then short bridge to Iceland followed by another short bridge to England (with inland route to London).

Yes the bridge span distance is a bit longer than existing bridges and yes more than one bridge is used, but since this is a theoretical problem with no limiting budget mentioned I think it is a valid solution, and far more "real-world" realistic than a straight-line single oversea bridge span.

Let us know what your instructor and class come up with as possible solutions (also what course this is for would be of help).

I like the idea of multiple bridges for a drivable route, though there are likely shipping route problems that make any bridge, as we know it, for reasons beyond the technical problems, impossible.

I do wonder if there would be a benefit from building bridges as sensible, and using in between those spans Large Ground Effect Ferries.

Edignan knows more than I do about large ground effect craft.

A land and sea truck route that allowed trucks from London to drive, and then ferry and then drive would at least be interesting to understand how to do.

It is not uncommon for truckers to drive back and forth from NY to California in a few days.

If Trucks could get between the two Continents in a reasonable amount of time that obviated going to port and significantly beat ships, and was cheaper than airplanes, it might work.

Certainly Jack of all Trades has nailed it with a common sense approach.

Thia is plausible but who could afford the tolls?

Not sure about who will pay what, but it does look feasible either jumping to Ground Effect Ferry in Newfoundland, or going as far North as Davis Strait, Baffin Bay, and then over by way of Greenland and Iceland.

Costs of and traffic of current shipping between NYC or the US and major ports like London per ton need to be compared.

I do think that the speed factor as "good enough" could buttress the utilization of such infrastructure, and types of Ferries.

I think 1st you should go to Haiti & gather up all the spare shipping containers & connect them together in a barge configuration....

or maybe unbroken bath tubs

I thought we didn't do anyone's homework here. If this is the case, I need someone to learn how to work trigonometric identities for me...and then answer all the questions on my next exam for me!

In case you didn't notice, no one provided a sensible, practical solution here, so the "no homework" rule still stands.

I think jack of all trades provided a sensible jumping off point.

I am about to get my Globe out and look at it to see the Land Route from London, Paris, Moscow or Berlin, to NYC.

Where to apply Ground Effect Ferries is to be part of my study.

Why don't we just cross that bridge when we come to it!?!

My madeup instructore allowed that it was extreme to attempt one bridge in a straight line and congratulated me on my suggestion of a combine of bridges and ground effect ferries for trucks.

The prettiest girl in the class looked at me, and so I kept secret that I had had help.

I think the instructor was trying to trick us.

The bridge already exists

The only thing is how to carry trucks through it.

(information bridge/ super highway)
