Can MCCB detect imbalance?

11/16/2009 2:58 AM

Can a,say, 3 pole MCCB detect an imbalance in the phase or in other wrds, if the current in 1 phase flowin in one pole of the breaker is diff from the other, how will the MCCB react to this imbalance condition? does it trip or ignore the imbalance in current or ???

thanks in advance..

No, it doesn't. All it does is trip if the current in any one of the three poles exceeds its trip rating. How long it takes to trip at whatever current is its charateristic, usually summarised with a letter: typically B, C or D.

Charectersitics 'B', 'C' & 'D' are applicable only to MCBs and NOT to MCCBs.

MCCB does'nt react to imbalance condition. MCCB is for overcurent or shortcircuit protection only. MCCB setting is 250% (maximum).

No! MCCBs cannot react to unbalance conditions by themselves. They are but passive devices. However, you can go for an external current unbalance relay to detect any current unbalance and a contact of this relay can be connected to the shunt release coil of the MCCB.
