Transformer Neutral-Ground Connection

11/16/2009 3:04 AM

Hi,

Is it necessary to link a transformer neutral to the ground/earth-ing point on the transformer chasis?

What will be the effect of not doing so?

Regards,

It is not necessary. Rather, I would suggest to connect the transformer neutral seperately to an earth electrode and connect the earthing point of the transformer chassis seperately to an earth electrode. Now, link these two earth electrodes at ground level only.

It's the difference between a TT earthing system and an IT system. For further information, check out the Wikipedia article on earthing systems.

Depends on the electrical system that you might have or want ...IT ot TT or TNS...

Seperating the N & T via a Knife switch and passing it through a Current transformer will enable you to have a neutral Earth fault protection relay..
