Videos Won't Play Correctly

11/16/2009 12:51 PM

Hi, since re-installing my computer about a month back, my videos have been skipping every few seconds, and the audio has been a bit stuttery. It was all perfect before, and I have had no new hardware since, and all my software is the same as before. I am on Win XP, AMD Phenom 2.3GHz x4, 2 gb RAM, 512mb ATI 3450. It is a common problem when playing from a dvd or a video on the hard drive. Does anyone know what could be wrong or how to fix it? Thanks in advance, Bondy I had posted this before, but the problem still remains.

Hi Bondy111,

What program are you playing the videos in?

You sound a little frustrated. Leave it to computers to ruin your day. My home computer wend down sometime Friday night and I spent the whole weekend trying to get it back up. It's still down and I'm on a (Win 2000) backup right now.

Since it's the same for all the players, it may be the DVD Drive itself. I don't have any experience with that kind of problem, but I'll bet someone here has.

True, and thanks. Don't you just hate Windows 2000? I am frustrated with it. Alas, if only re-installing could fix all problems. I'm not sure if it is the DVD drive, because the problem didn't exist before the re-install, and it is the same if I am playing from the hdd. Anyway, thanks for your help and hopefully someone will come to my rescue (hint hint). Take Care.

Did you (re) install the latest and greatest driver for your graphics card?

Is the card fan running? (have you physically looked at the fan?) Is the card overheating?

It's not the card overheating - It is one of the ATI fanless ones, and according to Catylist centre, is running at only 38 degrees and at 4% GPU power.

Are your hard drive vidios copied from the dvd drive? or does it play up with older recordings as well.?

Have you put a laser cleaner disc in your DVD player? it might help.

Most of the videos are from another pc, on which they played fine, they were ripped on that pc. The problem is the same with older recordings too, such as ones before I re-installed that worked fine. I have cleaned my DVD drive.

Hello Bondy,

First go to control panel and manually update Java.

Download Secunia personal software inspector : http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/

It will find if you need updates, drivers ect. ect..

Also you can check and conform the buffering settings...

I downloaded it, and it only came up with one unpatched security breach, which was to install the new firefox (which I already have) and I don't use. How do you check the buffering settings?

How about a virus scanner? Is it running full-time now, perhaps defaulted on reinstall?

http://ati.amd.com/products/catalystcontrolcenter/index.html

You should use this package with the ATI card you have, all the settings and graphic capabilities are configurable with it.

I only have used this when a customer specifies ATI and I don't recall the specific instructions but you can find them easy.

I have the latest ATI catylist control centre already. I have lots of settings and graphic capabilities with it, but so far have had no luck.

Open that beast up and use a continutity tester/multimeter etc., connect the probes to and from each component in a order of progression and check the meter as the blips occur. You may find something loose...

Done, and nothing loose. Why would re-installing affect it? It must be some driver related issue. The video doesn't explain the sound though - It's fine playing music just as loud as I like :D

You know the drill...uninstall the driver...reboot...reinstall...reboot

Ya know drivers can be glitchy even when all the directions are followed to the letter but keep at it wear'em down

You are probably running too many applications in the background. The consequent reduction in memory capacity can result in an erratic playback. Either that, or someone is running malware on your computer, and it's interrupting your playback.

Sounds like you have caught a virus or installed some other resource hog. Do a system restore to a date before the problem started showing up. Click start, then help and support, then search on restore, select "Using the restore wizzard". That will take you through the process step by step.

Re: Videos Won't Play Correctly

You've already eliminated many potential problem areas. Since you did a reinstall, all parameters were probably reset to defaults. I suspect the hardware acceleration in your graphics adapter has been reduced to mid-range, and is insufficient to keep from emptying the data buffer for playback. With the system resources you listed, maxing out the acceleration shouldn't have a noticeable effect on other functions. To do so:

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select properties from the menu.
  2. In the Settings tab, click on the Advanced button.
  3. In the Troubleshooting tab, move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full.
  4. Click Okay as necessary to close all the windows.
  5. You may need to reboot to have the change take effect.

I don't have a any viruses (that I can catch). I have scanned with AVG 9, Malwarebytes and spybot, all of which have been updated. The acceleration is already on full, and the processes that are running are not slowing it down.

A little investigation led me to this page. Follow the instructions to ensure that both the hard drive and the DVD drive are set for DMA (direct memory access), not PIO (programmed input/output). The page also lists a variety of other possible causes, along with a lot of feedback from users who had the same problem and solved it.

Hi Bondy,,

I was about to suggest what you have.

I had this problem and it was the wire/plug connection from the MB to the CD drive, where it was not quite 'square' as it was pushed into the CD player. And I also had a driver problem with the CD and DVD drives.

With ref' to the drivers, I had to download and re-install mine 6 times. It may have been because I was running a program in the background at the time and it did not like it. I got no error messages about it.

My advice is to turn everything off, including all malware protection, and the firewall, before trying to download the drivers. Download and install as wire recommends, but with the antivirus and all other anti's switched off.

It really is a case of suck it and see, but, as the download takes virtually no time, the download and then install of the drivers should be done before turning the malware protection back on. At least that is what I have found, through trial and error.

And DO TURN YOUR FIREWALL AND ALL OTHER SOFTWARE PROTECTION BACK ON WHEN YOU ARE DONE!

Good luck

Hi bb,

There's a good point, disable anti's and firewalls then download drivers to desktop, disconnect from web and just click on driver and it will install "presto".

Hi wire,

Appreciate your reply post, thanks.

Yes, disabling all anti's was the only way I was able to update quite a lot of my drivers

Good luck.
