double pole mcbs

11/19/2009 6:34 AM

in spain you have to use double pole mcbs, can someone explain to me how these are connected within the consumer unit. In the UK you have all reds connected through the bar and all neutrals joined together. How do you connect the neutrals in unit with all double pole mcbs

There will be an instruction leaflet inside the box in which the breaker is supplied.

If in doubt, consult a qualified electrician locally.

I was wondering if the consumer box is different or if you have to daisy change the neutrals together

In Spain the norm on newer installations is to use double pole or 1p+N breakers. input is always in the top of the breaker. Thus there is no need for a neutral bar.

The input unit is a sealed breaker. This is sized according to the contracted supply. It must then pass by earth leakage circuit breaker(s) (interuptor diferencíal) There must be 1 elcb per four mcbs to load circuits. There should be one lighting and one socket circuits per floor. Kitchen equipment e.g. washing machine, dishwasher, cooker, must each have a dedicated breaker.

Noe that the rules are called the "REBT" (Reglamento electrotécnico para baja tensión.) and if your installation doesn't match up you may not be able to transfer the contract to the purchaser when you sell your house. Get an electrician who is registered with the local area supplier (Endesa?). Be careful, many electricians will tell you they are authorised but in fact they are not and have to pay a third party to sign off their works. This doesn't mean they are bad but it leaves you with no protections.

regards

Chas

I have not seen this type of install before, if you have one live and neutral coming in to the box do you just loop all the neutrals together, trying to get head around how you connect if you have one neutral but more breakers.
