GT Compressor washing chemicals

11/26/2009 12:51 AM

Should we use a water-based solvent or a hydrocarbon based chemical solvent for compressor washing?

The GT we have in our facility is the GE LM600 PC Sprint Gas Turbine.

The chemical should be applicable for both on-line and off-line (Crank) washing.

I have a few options available.

1. FYREWASH F3

2. FYREWASH FB

Any recommendations would be helpful.

In my opinion, the use of chemicals for online washing of Gas Turbine compressors is a total waste of money (I will duck as the salesmen throw things at me). As there is no soak time how is the chemical cleaning any more effective that the water wash? Wash often enough with no chemicals and monitor the condition before and after washing. Then do the same with chemicals and see if you can measure the difference.

For offline washing on the other hand, where there is some wetted/soak time, chemicals can be very effective. Which one you use, and there are many, is a matter of research and choice. Which supplier gives the best service, the best price (not the cheapest) for an acceptable product etc.

The two you have mentioned are both well known and there are many others. Only you know in what atmosphere your machine is running and hence what it is that you have to wash off. Monitor compressor efficiency before and after washing and record the recovery with different chemicals and see how you go.

Nice little machine the LM600 - have fun.

Quick look in rochem's website resulted in the following: 1) FYREWASH FB is NOT in their products list (SB is available). 2) SB is specifically designed for ON LINE WW applications (hydrocarbon based solvent). 3) F3 water based biodegradable and can be used for ON and Off line WW. So, if your company is environmental friendly you should use the F3 type. Good Luck... "Aurea mediocritas"

In my plant we wash on crank and use a citrus based cleaner (Simple Green) and R O water. You can buy it at most industrial suppliers (even my local Home Depot sells it) You should be able to buy a gallon of concentrate for around $20 US or less. The exotic cleaners pushed by the chem companies are a waste of money. Make sure that whatever you use has the OEM's approval and follow the wash with a rinse ( R O water) I concur with Kaisan about using only water for online washing.

Use turbotect 950.

Water solution of turbotect 950 is very good for compressor washing both on line and off line. Inject turbo tect solution for 2 minutes and then rinse 20 minutes by lowering the speed and finallay wash with freshwater 2 to 3 times.

We are the user of 13 E2 Alstom Power gas turbine machine and use Turbotect 950
