General SCSI error on USB

11/28/2009 6:42 AM

I hope this is the correct forum.

I am running XP SP3 Professional. Recently I needed to switch off my computer and disconnect all wires whilst re decorating my room. When finished, I plugged everything back in and lo and behold, my Agfa Snapscan E50 scanner which is USB connected and previously working satisfactorily, responded with 'General SCSI error'. I tried different USB ports and all gave the same result. Disconnected sanner and removed software and re installed; same result - 'General SCSI error'.

I also have a laptop computer on which I installed the software and hardware. This computer is running XP SP3 Home Edition. After installation, I ran the software and the scanner works. I used a different USB cable for the laptop which was then used to connect to my PC. The PC reported the same error as previously.

Why should the same software being installed on 2 computers using the same hardware make one computer work and another not work? I have checked the registry and Properties which appear to be both the same.

Agfa stopped supporting this scanner several years ago and there appears to be forum on which I can as this question.

Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Are you using a USB to SCSI adapter? Otherwise I cannot understand why such an error is posted.....

Many early scanners of all types were in fact made with SCSI interfaces, so the question is valid. I have a slide scanner from Acer (now Benq) that is scsi....

You may need to delete and re-instal SCSI drivers.......daft as that may sound.....and then re-install the software.

Just a thought......

I have removed all related software and removed hardware and re installed. The latest driver is from Agfa and is a number of years old as they no longer support their scanners. The same drivers have been installed on the PC and laptop. The scanner has been tried in various USB ports on the PC. The scanner has a seperate power supply and is USB connection; there is no SCSI connection or interface.

If I go into Device manager, Imaging devices and Properties and click on Test, the response is all is working OK. The problem might be the Scanwise software but it is the same as on the laptop - and that works!

What baffles me is that it was working before I disconnected everything and it works on a laptop using the same drivers as on the PC.

Remove ALL other USB Devices and try again......
Copy and Paste from here (http://4peeps.com/ivb/index.php?showtopic=13045 - sorry, link no longer available)
"The short answer: As far as I can tell, Scanwise does NOT install correctly if there are ANY other USB devices plugged in and possibly not if there is history in the registry. I uninstalled Scanwise, cleaned the registry, unplugged all devices, re-installed on Windows 2000 and bingo, it sprang to life.
The long answer:
I do not like Scanwise very much, so I sort-of hoped that the latest version would be better than the "old" one (3 versions previously). On a working scanner system (E-40) I uninstalled Scanwise. Downloaded the latest from Agfa site and installed without changing ANYTHING in the hardware. Promptly a complaint "+++++++ERROR STRING: General SCSI error, <<detail>>" was in the log file and the application would not run.
I used a USB monitor and a registry monitor to discover the behaviour of Scanwise. The application always tries the USB route first, and if that fails it then looks up registry entries for the SCSI system. It tries scsi units 0 and 1 and then times out with the complaint that you referenced. What was interesting is that, even when it failed, it actually managed to talk to the scanner via USB (about 6 bi-directional interactions). Obviously Scanwise did not like the response from the scanner and for some reason decided that it did not wish to continue to discuss with the scanner via USB. I then uninstalled Scanwise. I unplugged ALL USB devices. I deleted anything in the registry that I could find which mentioned Agfa, scanwise or snapscan. I then plugged in ONLY the scanner. I received a message saying that I should install the software from Agfa. That I did and, without rebooting Windows the scanner sprang to life. Using the monitor the first 12 messages down the USB device were the same as in the failing case, but then it carried on with the normal business. Thus the message about SCSI is a GIANT RED HERRING for USB based scanners. The Scanwise (Scanstupid?) software writer failed to give an error message saying why the USB interaction was unsuccessful. So, my problem is solved and was not a hardware related problem - just incompetent software. I use Compuware WDMSniff for monitoring USB and www.sysinternals.com regmon for watching the registry actions of the application. Good luck with your problem."

My fix for this scanner issue has been exceedingly pleasant.

I changed O/S to Vista and scanner to Canon.

bwire's answer is short + correct - perhaps too short. The software provided by Hamrick is VueScan - forget about everything else - unless you are more interested in tinkering with your PC than actually using it. It runs under Windows, OSX, Unix and Linux and provides hundreds of drivers for > 1,200 scanners of practically any vintage. You do not have to select the appropriate driver - just some basic configuration information and the software selects the appropriate driver for your hardware + OS set up. And - they update the software continuously. On average I get 3 updates a week.

Dear All,

Thank you all for your contributions.

I feel there is something very fundamental and basic with my problem. As Goodygb suggested, I have removed all references in the Registry and tried different USB ports. In Device Manager it says I have 10 ports available and under Scanner and Camera the scanner is not highlighted. This suggests a clean instal.

When I click to instal the software (Scanwise v2) the files are extracted and there the program sits. In Task Manager Scanwise is there, doing nothing!

I have run a Registry cleaner and repaired the errors (none of which seem to be related to my problem).

I will see if my anti virus software and firewall, Panda, is blocking installation.

I will try Vuescan and let you know how I get on.

First of all, apologies to Woodygb for my typing error.

I have downloaded Vuescan and on the second attempt, the first was whilst plugging the scanner in, all now appears working satisfactorily.

I will now subscibe to Vuescan and use that program in preference to Scanwise.

Should I ever find the cause of and the solutiuon to the problem, I will let you know.

Tony
