Bridge Cranes

11/30/2009 1:47 AM

I have few questions related to subject : -

1. Applicable International codes and standards

2. Pendant height adjustment - Can any one furnish more details (with Photos if availble) about HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT OF PENDANT via. 1) Manual lifting device 2) Electrical lifting device.

3. Factory testing : - We do performance testing to demonstrate all crane motions, limit switches etc. Does it include the Longitudinal travels with safe working load ?? OR we do it at site where Rail will be available ??

4. Site test : Drop test to verify brake performance : - What I understand is that, This test is done to check slippage of break when movement is stopped by brake & Hoist with safe working load. Is it correct ???

With regards,

Please please tell me that you are not responsible for the design and or building or testing of cranes!

Hi Niles,

I do not think there is any International code E.O.T Cranes. Every country follows its own code we in India follow IS:3177 and IS:807 which based on the British Standards.

Regarding height adjustment of Pendant Switch you can mount a balancer on the crane or support Pendant on dog chain with a small hook on back side of Pendant so that you suspend Pendant on dog chain at any height.

Regarding factory testing of the crane you can not test long travel motion as each crane has different span. You can check idle running the L.T motion. All motions are tested at customer's premises after erection of the crane.

Brake test can be performed at site with 125% overload and safe working load.

I hope this answers your all questions.

With regard to codes; each country [and in some countries particular jurisdictions; e.g., states] have their own codes or follow an international set of standards that are modified and adopted locally. [e.g., National Electric Code.] Cranes have to comply with codes that apply to mechanical function, electrical and control functions as well as safety and environmental regulations. In addition, cranes have to comply with codes that apply to hoisting equipment. Standards are different. In some countries or regions recognized bodies set performance and specification standards for each class of crane. These are usually speak to material type, thickness, installation etc. Classification of cranes relates to lifting capacity, duty cycle, applications, environment etc. In the US the two leading bodies that define crane classes are the Crane Manufacturers of America Association [CMAA] and the Association of Iron + Steel Engineers [ASIE]. These classifications have been adopted in many other countries as well. As an example, Class F Cranes a designed to be used in high duty cycle, heavy lift environments such as steel mills. A Class F crane is required to run continuously at or near [within 5%] its design load for a minimum of 25 years. Nuclear cranes are similar but continuous operation is obviously not a requirement while Zero Failure is.

HI AtSYUSA,

You seem to be Crane expert from U.S.Well nice meeting you. I have worked in this industry in India for 33 years and retired 11 years back from Indo-German company in Mumbai. I had attended 'Promat" Show at Chicago in the year 1991. Hope we can exchange our experience on this subject in future.

Dear Mr.atsysusa,

We, in India, follow IS:3177 and IS:807 which based on the British Standards.

Kindly post the details of different standards, which you have come across for the Bridge Cranes. What is the D/d Ratio followed - i.e. Dia of the pulley (at P.C.D)/dia of the Rope, since it has an IMPACT on the life of the Rope. Larger the radius, lesser will be the sharp bending.

I insist, D/d should be 20, but many crane people give D/d as 12 or even less.

Dear Mr. Nilesh,

In addition to this the DEFLECTION test is to be conducted, keeping the load and trolley at the center - which is compulsory.

At the manufacturer's site, DEFLECTION Testing can be done by arranging safe working load in Tonnes to be placed at the center, preceded by keeping the trolley at the center.
