Solar Water Heating Data Need

12/02/2009 3:30 AM

Hello everyone. I'm currently helping out a friend in her research on solar water heating as a means to save fuel and energy for large scale cooking. I tried scanning for academic institution which I can direct her to in piecing together informations for the concept in order to convince our supervisors to support the project for implementation, unfortunately, all that pops out are sites for sellers of different solar water heater brands. What we need are actual data as to efficiency, energy absorption from the sun, heat transfer..etc. We're not specialists on this but I guess if we can convince our superiors of the viability of this project, this can dramatically reduce the use of firewood/petroleum for cooking fuel, as well as reduce carbon emissions. Can anyone refer us to or better yet provide us actual research data on solar water heating? Please help us out. Thanks!

Google: "justification of solar heating"

There are plenty of sites.

If you mail me I can share our data for the tropical latitudes incase that would be of interest.

I saw a documentary on a factory that made something called Sun Chips or something like that. They used solar reflectors to heat pipes that held cooking oil in them and they were able to heat the oil enough to use it to deep fry the chips. You might try and google for the site that does this.

Good luck!

There is a lot of information out there on solar energy - both commercial and academic/government. The trick is knowing what to do with it all!

There was quite a bit of info on solar energy published in teh 1970s and most of that is still valid (the sun really hasn't changed). What is not relevant from the 70s is the system configurations since materials and methods have changed.

You may want to consider RETScreen as a feasibility tester. It's free software, and so you get what you pay for. It's also very much subject to the rule: 'garbage in - garbage out' so be careful with it...

It is one of the tools that I use for feasibility testing I do for my clients, and the economics are fantastic in Ontario. http://villagetechnologies.ca/downloads/VTCaseSolarLaundry.pdf

We have also done some commercial kitchen designs but no case study for them.

If you are interested in a real feasibility study, I can do that for you, and the cost is realatively small for a quick check on teh potential in your area. Feel free to contact me directly at greg@villagetechnologies.ca

Hi; here are a couple of things to remember. Photo-thermal converters without concentrating optics can reach a maximum of 80ºC. For concentrators you have several options but the simplest right now track the sun on one axis these are solar troughs and off-axis parabolic reflectors with their axis of rotation parallel to the earths rotational axis (common form is the Scheffler reflector; google that term to get info) Their are other ways to concentrate light. If you need is large (greater than 5 kW peak power) then you may want to consider heliostat arrays. The tech for this is not readily available, so there will be prototyping needed. The best site to learn about heliostat projects is www.redrok.com. Here in my lab we are in the process of designing an open-source heliostat project for medium sized arrays (5-30 kW peak power), but I haven't had a chance to set up the web site yet to host files if there is interest feel free to contact me; revans at cicese.mx. Cheers

Thanks to all you guys for replying, you're helping us a lot. Basically, what we need is data on how much energy is absorbed from the sun in the heating process of a unit correlated to its design efficiency; how high is the maximum temperature that an assemby can produce (again, correlated to its efficiency); how much energy is consumed in the manufacturing process of the heating assembly; how much greenhouse gas is emitted during its manufacture; what is the maximum energy recovery rate of an assembly, assuming it is at its highest efficiency; then we will have to compare this to energy produced during wood burning when cooking;how much CO2 emission can be reduced (in the burning of firewood) if we use the solar water heating system; what will be the return of investment if we install such a system..etc. I guess this is the best way we will be able to convince our superiors to consider the use of such systems. We're in the process of preparing a proposal to our superiors for the implementation of such a project for next year. Budget is already available should we convince them on this, but unless we convince them of a viable reduction of carbon footprints involved...I guess you know our worry. I'm not an expert on this subject and any help offered will be valued greatly. Again, thanks.

have done a feasibility study to use solar energy to produce hot water in one of the regional hospitals in Oman and published a paper based on the work.If you need it I will send it by mail.

Thank you very much for the offer. If it would not be too much to ask, please send it to our office email address at davao.dav.@icrc.org. I'm working for the International Committee of the Red Cross - Water and Habitat Department here in the Philippines. Again, Thank you.
