This is from old Ph.D. who finally will like to help graduate student to start a project so we can develop graduate student and work force engineer to avoid foreign dependence.
Question is I have lost touch with this subject and will be keen to up date myself before guiding others on the subject of silicon carbide fiber manufacturing, characterization and eventually developing enough work horses in this country so we will not depended on others. Like currently we are depended for our project on Nicalon fiber. Can we develop resources to be better than Japan.
In US we always do better than others globaly can we do this on Silicon carbide fibe manufacturing also
Sir, if you are foreign dependent in this product, market, process and so on, you shouldn't be so cocky about your nationality.
I think this is a neutral open forum about technology and someone, specially with your age and education, should respect its neutrality. It will probably get people to share information and help you more.
You will need a specialised chemist who can select among carbo-silanes and polymerisation of these - or just try and ?
You will need an early choice which of the existing processes you will try (that should be the first step) - or invent a new one?
Spinning polymerised precursors or coating existing fibers that stay intact in the core of the on-top grown fiber.
You will need a company that is willing to put considerable money into this approach, 10M$ is my estimate - without any own real information, maybe much more.
I would start with going to the related conferences and gossiping with everybody and publish some of this in local newspapers as technical and science writer so that visiting the producing companies may be possible for a while - to have a look.
Not interested to get supported by corporation at this stage of game. Yes very interested to put this at Alfred University, New York eventually for future ceramic engineer to support this future potential national materials needs. The idea of having chemistry department in the team is good one.
I am currently generating idea and see is this something worth doing
