What's the Best Coating for Carbon Steel?

12/09/2009 8:14 AM

We presently have a carbon steel tank that we use to create a slurry mixture in of water and granulated plastic. We have experimented with a slight brine solution in place of virgin water to enhance our process and may need to now protect the tank if we stay with the brine solution. Long term, even with virgin water we will have to address the carbon steel and water corrosion issue anyways.

Any suggestions/experience with the many coatings that are available? Which ones can be applied by plant maintenance personnel? Which ones wear better, adhere better?

How old is the carbon steel ? I recently uncovered (2 feet soil) about

a dozen carbon steel road maintainer blades.Buried for over ten years,

no apparent damage to edge.

A sacrificial anode would mean the tank would be protected with no down-time needed to install the protection, perhaps?

I say go for the gold---a robust solution---------------that is--use of a polypropylene or some other inexpensive plastic tanks -----they are chemical resistant, cheaper and can be easily replaced---------I see these coatings and liners, inspections and quality are nothing but huge headaches-----Just think

good comments so far. The tank is 10 years old. The present installation makes removal of the tank and installation of a plastic or other material tank very difficult and costly, not to mention the extended downtime to do such.

Hello Jbeebs,

My suggestion to eliminate rusting problems, power-wash your tank and let dry, sand-blast and use immediately high solids (around 85 to the best 100% solids) 2-pack epoxy metal primer and follow the next day when first coat is cured with 2-pack epoxy high-gloss pigmented finish coat or the best, use a thick coat of 2-pack clear epoxy (aromatic amine curing agent as hardener or part B). This system will protect your steel tank and the coating will also resist to abrasion due to your plastics in brine under agitation. Take a few information in your location about best applicators and suppliers of epoxy coatings. I have no commission so you have to find the best yourself. If you need more info about epoxy coatings, let me know, Gil.

Whatever lining you choose - proper surface preparation is key
