Transformer Capacity

12/09/2009 10:38 AM

A client has a doubt that the transformer supplied by the vendor is of lower capacity than the rating mentioned on the rating plate. What review/tests will be necessary to assess the transformer capacity?

Conduct the test by using load bank to get the load current as shown on the transformer nameplate for a certain period of time. Record the amper, voltage, noise and temperature, then compare to the transformer specification.

It would be most helpful if you gave specifics, such as the nameplate data and what was desired to purchase.

Once the nameplate data is compared to manufacturer's dimensions, weight, etc. no electrical tests may be necessary. If nameplate data and manufacturer's data don't jive, then point that out to supplier and demand to know what's up.

Check the current rating of the xformer and load it step by step while checking the current drawn with clamp on ammeter untill u are appraoching the xformer rated current.

During the above period, check the xformer parameters for its capacity to deliver.
