SA-285 Grade C vs. ASTM A-36

12/11/2009 4:54 PM

We have two process vessels. Both vessels are subject to boil outs with hot water at 200 F. The boilout removes small amounts of methyl alcohol and methyl acetate. Both are made of carbon steel. One is specified as SA-285 Grade C and the other ASTM A-36. The pressure is atmospheric. Any reason why one should appear to have more corossion ?

I would suspect that the SA-285 vessel is the one less corroded. This material commonly has copper additions to it to enhance its corrosion resistance over A-36.
