Delta is dangerous, watch out for the high voltage leg. Don't feed it to the holding coil.

That would be true if you're using 120/240 delta with a wild leg, not if you are talking about 480 volt delta, which sometimes has a floating ground to allow it to keep operating in the case that one of the legs gets shorted to ground. Watch out if it is the latter cause it can bite you pretty hard if you don't know about it.

Can it not be found in diagrams of other equipment, and be cloned from them?

Generally it could be, but you have to be sure that your motor's wiring diagram is the same as well as the application. Some motors even start on delta then switch to wye. I have even seen some large motors (50 hp and larger) that use an induction reactor as part of a staged starting system. There are many systems that have been used over the years with varying degrees of success. The best thing to do would be to check with the manufacturer of the piece of equipment that you have because they may have found one type of setup that works better on thier equipment than others. It's always good to be on good terms with the manufacturer's technical service department.
