Here is a more sensible question

12/13/2009 6:47 PM

If a squirrel runs at 12mph, a cat at 30 mph and a wombat at 15mph how fast will they run when tied together?

[Sorry, mate - couldn't resist it! JDG]

Oh, a Fermi problem! First we figure out who chases whom, who runs away from whom, whether the cat can make up its mind, and who gets tired first. Note that a wombat outweighs the other two by a factor of about 5. Then a rather chaotic combination of addition/subtraction....

Depends on the masses of the 3 bodies, the "pulling power" each has, and the manner in which they're tied together.

I'd ask Del the cat, he knows lots of stuff about Wombats & things.

That has to be a world record for "fold/dob"

I dispute the data. Apart from anything else, what will happen when the squirrel takes to the trees ! Cat's can climb a little (though their rightful place is stalking the bushes), but the wombat is just dead-weight. If they're tied like in a '3-legged' race, the one in the middle wouldn't have to do any work. Tied in a loop, and it very much depends on what the order is

The wombat will dig a hole and drag the other two into the depths.

Why would the cat stalk bushes? I thought they stalked furry things and feathery things.

It's like 'pacing the garden'. In summer, mine goes rampant and then looks surprised when it runs out of steam in winter. That's gardens for you, they just don't listen.

Guest, it All depends on if the wombat would like to run.

You really should have paid more attention that test protocol training film and pondered deeply on OH&S aspects inherent in your question.

For instance; were there an alliance, what chance would an IO chip have against such combined fleetness, cunning and brawn?

But also if conducting this test outdoors you should beware flammables, motorcycles and lightning.

Good luck and I hope you receive much useful input on your question.

After the feeding and getting fed is over (Sorry KrisDel®, your company is getting half closed)

They are tied together, so no Kris climbing tree.

The final speed, (after a bit of rest) will be (if the final mass wants) somewhere around

m1V1+(m2+m3)V2/(m1+m2+m3)

Note this is a vector sum.

Note: For a simpler solution, replace Wombat with Tasmanian Devil.

Two of them don't they get dragged along behind the wombat. That's assuming he isn't trying whip their butts. In that case they all come to a stand still when the wombat pounces on the squirrel because it can't keep up with the cat.

Have you ever tried to tie a cat to a squirrel? Or either to a wombat? Oh the bloodshed!

I say we tie them head to tail,of course the wombat would have to come last, and test the theory......ooh..........ugh.............ouch............crap..........youch............ Ok,got the cat tied to the squirrel now quick... who has a spare wombat laying around?

I'd put my money on the three drunk (insert favorite drunken ethnicity) in a three legged potato sack race blindfolded. Seems to me they'd be going in opposite directions, so clearly the wombat would have an advantage to about .375 MPH.

Can we use zip ties? I wish to test out my theory this weekend!
