Vertical Farms

06/24/2005 11:49 AM

In a move to lessen the ecological footprint of large cities there is a move to replace "urban blight" areas with new verticle farms. These farms:
The Vertical Farm is a concept that seeks to address the major concerns of the environmental degradation of the modern city by composting, recycling waste and farming in a standard tenement building. The "ecological footprint" of the city will be lessened and therefore the city will become a more sustainable setting. The reduction of wastes and the production of foods for consumption will in turn increase the quality of life for all those within the city and its surrounding area. The reduction in transportation of both wastes and of food products and the use of abandoned buildings will directly increase the quality of the urban settling."
I'm thinking this is the next logical step between the cities of today and the Arcologies of tomorrow.

Delftree

For some, vertical (or at least, urban) farming is more than just an idea. It's a profitable business. The Delftree Corporation in North Adams, Massachusetts grows shitakke mushrooms in an old, once-abandoned mill. The Delftree Mill Re-Use Plan provides details, if you're interested.

Yeah, but what does it smell like?

Composting and other processes can be pretty stinky... is farming just the latest offence (like highways) to be dumped on poorer neighborhoods?
