Rotating Buildings

12/14/2009 7:30 PM

Did you guys heard of the plan of erecting a residential building which allows each floors rotate individually? I've seen the picture of it and it might be put up in UAE? Also seen a picture of an octagon in sydney (pls see the link ). What puzzles me is how are they going to plumbed the structure? Any ideas guys? http://news.yahoo.com/nphotos/slideshow/photo//091211/ids_photos_ts/r221664181.jpg/

The "secret" to this is a multipath commutator (swiveling union), located coaxially with the pivot point between floors. Though I have seen a 6-circuit hydraulic commutator for a rotating crane, I think it was a custom-engineered item. The same could be done for a combination of plumbing (hot, cold, drain) and electrical (hot, neutral, ground).

Various rotating restaurants (e.g., Seattle's Space Needle, Edmonton's Chateau Lacombe, many others) use this or a like system.

It is simple the central shaft is a constant ,e.g. if the building is multi storied of diameter say 40meter (120 feet approx) the central 10m (30feet ) will be shaft carrying all the services and washroom

So the building will rotate not at any degree but on a fixed degree so that the services are least affected by change angle

The person will always feel the building is rotating

Well this going to be tricky in this building. It will have wind turbines to poduce energy at each floor..each floor has can rotate 360degrees..still beats me...

What about the Post Office (now BT) tower revolving restaurant

In 1966, the revolving restaurant was opened by Tony Benn and Billy Butlin, of Butlins Holidays fame. The restaurant offered fantastic views across London and would make one whole revolution every 22 minutes.

Hmmmm, wonder if it worth building a rotating house out in the desert sands of the UAE? Wouldn't you more than likely see about the same thing all around the house......endless sand????

As far as the waste plumbing....who knows??? Probably that can be solved by just whizzing or dumping at the nearest opening in the hand-railing, then profess to visitors (if they dare ask) that the mess was made by a herd of very naughty "Flying Camels" passing by!!!! LOL Sorry, my sick perverted mind is working overtime on this one.......seen enough bloody sand (in the desert) to last a lifetime and more......that's why I don't do sandy beach vacations the past 18 years.....

An alternative version is to locate the plumbed items within a central core, and maybe the heavier electrical loads as well. Then supply the smaller electrical loads via a trolley-like mechanism following circumferential rings.
