Some help finding a Powered (pneumatic?) Linear Displacement Sensor/Probe?

01/16/2007 10:27 AM

I am looking for a Pneumatic (or otherwise powered) Sensor/Probe that will detect linear displacement.

Heres the application: An I-beam will be worked on by an automated plasma cutter. The beam needs to be measured in order for the plasma cutter to work, and it takes a long time to measure using the tool itself. We need two powered probes that will drop down from a bridge to touch the i-beam, and return the displacement.

Thanks for the help

Why not a laser? There are lots of laser sensors on the market.

We looked at lasers, we need an accuracy of around 2 thou at 20 inches, it's impractical for a laser.

How about an ultrasonic sensor?? Some Banner ultrasonic sensor can detect up to 3m. With a little modification to the circuit, you would probably do it.

Ultrasonic is used for proximity sensing, it's not nearly accurate enough for this application, we have gone with pneumatic cylinders with internal LVDTs which give a resolution of around 5 micrometers, thanks all for the suggestions.

If anyone found a solution I'd be interested also. Linear displacement down to a thou over about 48 to 60 inches if possible.

I thought of getting a scale scribed into something thermally stable and having a screw driven control provide incremental offsets between scribed marked (i.e. the scribed mark optically confirms EXACTLY where the 18 inch mark is, then a stepper motor provides + or - granular control from there.)

Any other thoughts or comments?
