It is a critical attribute inspection of the "first article" produced in a production run.

If the sample passes the "first article inspection" the run can begin without any modifications. That part is typically retained as a standard.

Under AS9100, AMS-A-21180 and some other specifications whenever a pattern is made, revised or even moved to a new foundry the first production run shall require a FAI or First Article Inspection where one casting of each impression on the pattern board shall be blued and laid out for each dimension (attribute) on the drawing as well as all Notes , specifications(x-ray, FP etc.) on that drawing shall be covered as having been met and reported on in a FAIR (First Article Inspection Report).

If the item is machined out of barstock then all dimensions and specifications will be accounted for on a FAI Report.

A bubble drawing (circled references to each item) is often also required.
