Dear Clever CR4 Guys - Why Don't Animated .gifs Work Any More?

12/16/2009 6:18 PM

For some time now, any animated .gif files I upload to a post do not work (as in "are not animated").

This is a shot of the frames of an animated smilie, before upload & after retrieving it using "right click - save picture as":

Here's the smilie for you to play with:

My avatar is an animated .gif, and it still works (and if I do the "right click - save ..." thing I can see all the frames) - I'm reluctant to try to modify & replace it in case it never works again.

I've seen some animated images work recently - someone posted the "crowd clapping" scene (sorry, can't remember which thread, and didn't check the properties at the time).

Please can one of you clever chaps fix it for meus?

(Or at least provide an explanation).

Last time I tried, you can't upload, but you can cut'n'paste from a web page. It may well have been I that did the infamous cllappers (honest, tho I don't recall where).

If you post the individual frames, as you did above, we can print them off and assemble a nice flicker-book.

Dang, I just tried cut'n'paste again and it won't work . It was a good 'un too (scroll down)

John,

Had wondered the same - seems that insert (from browse) does not work but Copy/Paste does seem to work - if these are still animated.

Cheers, Bob -

Fatso.gif doesn't appear on my m/c, but Sparkstation's and my avatars are OK.

Seems I get Fatso moving cos it is in the machine, and the source of the file. On another PC next to me, without the file, the screen is identical to yours. Sparkstation's and your avatar are sourced from within CR4 and both OK. Perhaps for those animates already loaded in CR4 they continue to work but new entries are filtered and revised. Don't know about the Smileys though unless they are common and easily revised by CR4.

The uploaded one used as an avatar is the identical file but it has lost its animation in the upload process.

Sparkstation did comment in an early post, which could be part of the answer;

" When animated .gif or .jpg/jpeg format files are reduced in size by the CR4 Forum Software, the Software takes an instantaneous 'snap" of the file picture, and because that is the FIRST FRAME OF THE ANIMATED PICTURE, the result is a reduced sized FIXED picture - WITHOUT ANY ANIMATION. "

And this classic of Sparkstation's is in CR4, so it should be animated when pasted

Don't think the size thing could apply to the animated smilies - they're relatively tiny. I tried one the other day - image 38x38 and the whole file less than 2.5KB.

Also, I was happily posting animated images for a long time after Sparky posted that.

Kris,

Is that a bmp or gif file. Properties indicate gif but if you try to save, bmp is the only option ?? Doesn't seem to be dimension limited as it is 480x360 pixels.

'tis a curious situation that some animate and some don't!!

If you can't insert them, paste them,

Hi Bob, I'm pretty certain it was a gif. I think I bookmarked the location on another pooter, so can probably find out for sure later today......(I don't know how I manage to put so much uncertainty into answering a straightforward question !)
