Hi Ava,

Simply contribute useful information where you can (and if you feel like it - there is no shortage of interesting threads to make input to). Bear in mind that CR4 is a fairly 'chatty'/friendly type place and a lot of banter takes places, so don't misunderstand if some comments are lost in translation or their meaning is not clear (members will almost always elaborate if asked). An often made comparison is that CR4 is a bit like an informal chat with friends in a bar/coffee shop. If you have a question related to science/engineering, then go ahead and post it up (I'd advice you search CR4 first to check that it's not been asked before).

The more time you spend on CR4, the better you will get to know it's members and how it all works (though it is somewhat addictive). Look around, read, and join in the learning/sharing/fun.

For reasons that may become apparent in time, and to forestall jokes by certain members (you know who you are ! ), I'd advise you not to go anywhere near the thread titled "Bath Breaking Technique" .

More seriously, just enjoy, and engage with what interests you. You might want to use the facility to detail your interests in your 'user biography' - click on edit profile).

Kris.

Never go there. It exposes the stark, bizarre underbelly of CR4 members in the never ending quest for truth. And an easy way to remove a.............. never mind. Just don't go there!

"(though it is somewhat addictive)"- your are kidding, aren't you? Please tell me you are kidding...Please tell me eight hours a day surfing CR4 is NOT an addiction...I HAVE to spend eight hours a day on CR4 for PROFESSIONAL reasons! I don't have time to elaborate on this- more new threads to explore...

Re: Introduction

Welcome. You've received some excellent advice so far.

Let me add a few simple things.

1) Don't use all large case letters in posts (You did great with your first message, so good job).

2) Solving of homework problems for school is a no-no in most cases. People ask overt questions which can be traced directly to university textbooks under the guise of "oh no, I'm really doing this, it's not a school homework problem".

3) Be complete and informative in providing information when you ask a question. The more information you can provide, the better answers you will get.

4) If the forums help you solve a problem, please respond with your solution, so everyone can benefit.

5) Do a little basic research and investigation before you post questions. You may find an answer; if not, or you need some clarity, then post your question here.

6) Don't post the same question in multiple forums. If you think it's in the wrong forum, contact the administrators to see if it can be moved.

7) Thoughtful questions receive positive responses. People who ask questions like "tell me what electricity is", or "give me plans to build a powerplant", "how to build perpetual motion machine" will get you nowhere.

Again, welcome!

If posting Avant Garde or very likely to be considered to be 'off-topic' replies you have the option of declaring so. Violation of laws of thermodynamics may attract adverse replies from law abiding members. Likewise issues that one can oneself sort out by a more diligent net search. Whole lot of good things and all great (may be abrasive sometimes when the situation demands it) people.

Hi s.udhayamarthandan,

With respect, I question one of your (very good) points;

"Respond to reply posts of your thread in an interactive manner"

Whilst posting a question does put a certain onus of responsibility on the person to follow it up, I don't agree with the wording "your". A question asked becomes open property, and the original poster doesn't exactly 'own' it. They may have asked a question that later visitors may come here wanting to ask. Responses should be directed to the original person, so it is (in my humble opinion) no bad thing to incorporate general information of relevance to the question when posting a reply. Courtesy always wins the day, and I hope I conveyed my thoughts on this without offence. I'm far from being a paragon of virtue when it comes to netiquette, but I like to try when I see people such as yourself being helpful. Discourse and understanding is what helps us all to get along. Very good input/advice for our new member.

Kris,

Congratulations on crossing the 10000 post mark. Del and you are the leading contributers. In many threads the OP who had asked for some clarification or suggestion is simply silent. As you have said continuation in the open forums is being taken care by other members who keep the thread lively. I felt, the OP's interaction could also be more of involvement for whom it is meant for.

Many discussions are very much informative and it is more effective than book reading.

Greetings for New year 2010.

Re: Introduction

I regularly mentor a group of students from a local school on an engineering scheme here in the UK. These students are not necessarily interested in becoming engineers and for a few of them it is simply a way of gaining credit marks.

You would be surprised though at some of the idea's that come from them. Real 'blue sky' engineering by people who are not involved in the day-to-day graft on those particular products.

My point here is that no matter what your background is you can still come up with answers and good points in discussions.

"This forum is for engineers."!!

I would probably rephrase that ...... "This forum is about engineering" perhaps?

Im not an engineer and have found the forum to be educational, entertaining, amusing and yes definately addictive. Oh and yes it has been of great help in my professon ...... I swear boss ....it has.... all those hours ARE necessary.

Welcome. The above is valuable advice. Please feel free to post questions on engineering topics and also to chime-in on others' posts where helpful information is to hand.
