Weldolet vs. Reducing Tee

Guys,

One of my client proposing to use weldolet instead of 30" X 14" reducing tee to take branch connection. In my opinion standard reducing to be used for the sizes available in B16.9.

If weldolet is acceptable any additional testing is required?

which one is preferable? and why?

When you use an weldolet for the branch connection (assuming a significant flow is taking place through it), the flow at the entry point and for quite sonme distance across it will be highly turbulent. The streamlining of the Tee will not be available in this type of connection.

I am not sure it is acceptable or not, but it is not advisable. Since it is your client, does he have any specific reason of not prefering the Tee? vendors I could have understood- cost cutting.

For anyone to give you an intelligent answer we would need more information.

Such as:

- The Material ( Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Alloy, etc.)

- Maximum operation Pressure

- Maximum operating Temperature

- The Commodity (Oil, Water, Steam, etc.)

- The Design Code (example: ASME B 31.1, B31.3 or other)

- Type of facility (process unit, Offsite Tankage, etc.)

The material is Carbon steel - ASTM A 106 Gr.B

Des. pressure - 18 bar

Des. temperature - 82 deg C

highly Sour with 4mm CA

service - Water

Code - B31.3

Facility - Process unit

It seems that a 14-inch-on-30 weldolet or 30x14-inch reducing tee would be unusual and expensive. You might consider a 30-inch tee with a 30x14-inch reducer on the branch, but even this reducer might not be very common. Of these choices, a weldolet would be least desirable as to flow characteristics.

If it is Low Pressure piping, why not direct branch welding with pad plate instead of expensive tee/weldolet?

If the fitting that is to be used is a "true" Weld-O-Let, as opposed to a "shaped nipple" (a short length of pipe with a curved end to fit the larger pipe) there will be NO problems with turbulence because the Weld-O-Let is designed with a bell-mouth inlet/outlet connection to the larger pipe. It also has appropriate beveled edges for welding to the "parent" pipe and to the branch pipe.

It is also stronger than the pipe (or a tee) because of its thick body metal. It is easy to install (just set in place, mark required opening on main pipe, remove and cut opening with a torch and grind smooth, then reset fitting and weld in place) and generally meets all normal pipe and pressure stress requirements.

It is also a lot less expensive than either a reducing ell or full size ell with reducer, especially in larger pipe sizes.

Maybe my Web search skills are not up to snuff, but I haven't yet found any 14-inch on 30-inch weldolets, let alone prices, anywhere. Any hints?

I did not go looking for the stuff because the OP says that his customer want to use it. I assumed that such products were available. If not- all bets are off.
