Annoying Security Program

12/30/2009 11:35 AM

Somehow, I don't know how, but somehow I accidentally ended up installing the trial version of that worthless piece of shit SpyEraser. Now I can't shut it down. let alone delete it, without purchasing it first. Does anybody know how to get rid of it for good without having to threaten to bomb the programmers' office unless they remove it?

So,

Did you fall in the pool again and short out all your mystical powers?

This helped me once to get rid of something that had embedded itself in my system.

Being an appliance user and not a computer whiz I have no idea if it will help you.

At least it didn't crash my system and it did unlock the files so I could delete them.

Good Luck!

More like I was so busy multitasking that something slipped by me unnoticed. Anyway, I sent an email to the manufacturers asking them how to remove it. Oh, and I added that I might report their software to the FBI as cyber blackmail because the only way to remove it or even shut it down is to purchase it first.

If they are not in the USA, then your threats are useless....do you know where they are?

Based in the US, but their R&D department is in Czechoslovakia. Figures, doesn't it?

Or you would hire someone like me to remove it for you.

I deal with this kind of stuff all the time. I've never had to buy something in order to remove it.

I don't know your system but I'll bet you can replace your HDD for about 100 USD. I know that's not what you wanted to hear but think of the satisfaction you'll get when you kill the old one with your light sabre! Good Luck!

To quote a politician who probably won't come around these parts, "I feel your pain".

Check out my post from last week about rogue anti-spyware. I got some great advice from our user community about what sounds like a similar problem.

Here's hoping your story has a happier ending than mine, DVader1000. If all that's wrong with your PC is SpyEraser, then the software that Lynlynch mentioned above should do the trick.

What's up with Adobe too?

Only updates I take soon as they show up are from MAC, Apple, whatever.

If I'd not been offered a couple of reconditioned MACs for cheap when I had a job, it is right unlikely you guys would hear from me at all.

I do know of at least two who would prefer I was totally broken down, but somehow what I got takes a lickin, and keeps on tickin.

Love, RSD P.S. I figure there is a Mob company that makes up bricks to throw in your window, and then charges you to replace the window, and gets away with it because there are a lot of windows and the window glass companies like to sell windows and glass, so don't work at stopping the brick throwers.

I know someone who went to a Cubs game with a friend right after demolition of the old Wrigley Field. Someone with a shopping cart full of bricks approached them in the parking lot and offered to sell them bricks from the old Wrigley Field stadium. They were going to turn him down, then they noticed a number of cars with broken windshields. They bought two bricks. After the game, they found their car had no damage. Coincidence?

Not to be nit pickey, but I happen to know that the original Wrigley Field still stands. The issue you describe was much more likely to happen around the old Comiskey Park where the White Sox play.

You are right. It's my faulty memory. I should have checked my facts. I remembered it was a baseball game and the old ballpark had been torn down. As I get older, it's the names that escape me! Thanks for the correction!

Lot of things are right in your face in Chicago.

Streeterville is an interesting historical place.

Used to have a book I bought from Loompanics titled How to Start Your Own Country.

Think I remember that during Prohibition, some guy built a bar on some Chicago River landfill dump at the end of a deadend, put up a flag, declared it an independent nation, and it flourished.

I posited awhile back that the poor old US Post Office might could use some work protecting the internet email.

Studied espionage and spycraft for a good while, enough to be sure I didn't really want to be a spy.

Next thing I know I might as well need a password to go to the bathroom.

Remember that song about The Lincoln Park Pirates?

Aint lived in Chicago in awhile, but remember the famous events, like it was common for tow truck company to just tow away any convenient car for ransom.

Load a Linux distro in a dual boot configuration. You can then examine your Windows disc sector and delete files to your heart's content. Careful, though- you can over do it. Malwarebytes has some good products that should help, as others have suggested. Consider doing your web surfing on something other than a Windows box...

There's six ways from Sunday to remove it but the simple way is to Brute Force Un-installer

BFU is a scripting program that can execute a series of preset commands like a Windows batch file, aimed at un-installed programs that are hard to remove, un-install improperly or simply unwanted. Scripts are plain text and can be written with Notepad, and the command syntax is very transparent.

BFU is very complete and powerful, has a small memory footprint and has no un-installer.

All right, thanks for your advice everyone. Fortunately, my story does have a happy ending. I downloaded TuneUp Utilities last night, and not only was I able to finally shutdown SpyEraser and prevent it from starting up with Windows again, it even enabled my PC to run faster.

Happy 2010 everyone.

The backup, if made now, will, unless you use some clever tricks, have exactly the same "Virus" as is on the hard disk.....all that work for nothing!!

The best way is to boot from a Linux Rescue CD, copy all the important data like pictures etc to an external USB hard disk.

Run the Linux antivirus and try and clean the hard disk, I find that does not work always.

Sso I then format the Windows NTFS disk to FAT32 but using the Linux CD rescue.

I then re-install windows and simultaneously re-format back to NTFS.

The reason is that some viruses can live through a normal windows format! I have yet to find one that can live through two different formats....

Run Antivirus and Rootkit scan on the USB hard drive before copying data back.....

These programs are annoying because they start on boot up so to get rid of them it is sometimes possible to uninstall them in Safe mode. That way they aren`t running and can be disposed of. Hope this helps. A friend downloaded one of these as an internet disk check utility it reported about 50 problems all spoofs because we had just made his system up and it was as clean as a whistle. The moral is don`t click it there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Re: Annoying Security Program

First, try to remove it by going into the control panel and see if you can remove it under "add and remove programs" (Windows XP) or "programs and features" (Win 7).

If that doesn't work, run the command "MSCONFIG" at the command line. START>RUN in Win XP or just type it in the space above the start button in Vista or Win 7.

Open the "startup" tab and uncheck the program in that window. Close the window and restart the computer.

You should also scan for malware, as this is probably classified that way. I suggest you go to the site www.malwarebytes.org and download and run their free utility.

Good luck.

You've gotten one of the new anti-virus viruses. It can be removed with a good antivirus program. Some programs will erase it but it will come back if they're not good enough. Malware bytes should remove it. If it won't, go to antivirus blogging sites and someone will have exact instructions to remove it. By the way, you'll probably have to remove it while running in safe mode! I would recommend combofix, but its site says its got problems right now.

you can also do a system restore to a date before you installed the app.

there's also some comment on that app, here.
