IP ratings are for the suitability of the equipment for mechanical and water ingress protection. Whereas the class II Div 2 ratings are for suitability of equipment for working without causing a hazard when such equipment are installed in hazardous classified areas.

Guest,

First of all, you are comparing two different things – IP (Ingress Protection) is completely different from what is mentioned in NEC article 502. I don't think there is anything in NEC that is comparable to IP (CENELEC). However, the NEMA enclosure type is comparable to CENELEC IP (http://www.nema.org/prod/be/enclosures/upload/NEMA_Enclosure_Types_11-05-2.doc)

NEC article 500 (Hazardous Locations) can be compared to IEC 60079.
