Wi-Fi want to control plant lights remotely

12/30/2009 6:08 PM

Is any one using Wi-Fi or any other remote controls to control their lighting? All I want to do is turn off the lights after the day shift goes home at 4:00 pm. But, the building that I want to turn off the lights in has only two people work the second shift. So, I want to be able to turn off the majority of the lights remotely (some how), maybe, a timer. I'm look to try to save money by turning out the lights on the off turn.

It can be as simple or as complicated as you want. Usually, each floor or area has a main breaker so it should be easy to go around switching them off rather than switching off individual lights. If your breaker panel is centralized, it will be much easier.

Alternatively, you can have remote controlled contactors for each area controlled from a central location.

Next, yes, you can use a timer.

Vulcan

One can also use a procedure: the last one to leave the building turns off all the lights.

LOL, if only that would work consistently...

Drive through any major city after dark and you can see how often that simple procedure fails.

I suggest you use a timer and a photo cell to turn on and off the lights you want to control.

Best regards.

I have used a product called "Hot Shot Wireless Controller" to provide remote control of a well pump that works by using a float switch on the transmitter side, and the receiver side wired into a conventional contactor. This would work for a lighting system as well- one can use multiple receivers with a single transmitter.

How about programmable time switches? http://www.google.co.in/search?rlz=1C1CHMI_enIN291IN303&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=programmable+time+switches

There are any manufacturers of equipment that can control your lighting. They range from the very sophisticated, such as Johnson Control Metasis, Trane Summit, Honeywell/Novar Opus, etc. To midrange non affiliated Leviton, ASI, LSI, Dreamwatts, etc. To the low level HAI, X-10 Pro, etc. You can google any of them and similar links.

All of them will have some sort of web interface which allows you to control the system from the Internet.

CAUTION:

Having controls on the web is a lot like having the keys to your house hidden outside under a rock. Any one who knows where it is can take control of your plant and all they have to know is how to access it and have a smart phone. I would make sure the site was absolutely secure and highly restrict its users.

A company in Quebec City, Canada, has exacty wha you're looking for. It's calledDimOnOff: www.dimonoff.com

They have a line of relays that you install in the power feeds that go to individual lights and groups of lights. The relays communicate with a central control into which you can program lighting schedules, etc. Relay communication to the controller is through the power feeds, so no need to add control wiring (or any other wiring)!

You can install your relays anywhere, which means that you can control individual lights that share a common power feed before splitting out. For example, four lights on a pole (say, in a parking lot) could be turned off individually or in pairs, on a rotating basis so as to 'burn' them at the same rate.

At to cap it all off ... the controllers can be accessed by Internet or by internal LAN. You don't have to go to the remote site to reprogram a controller every time you want to change the lighting schedue, to add a new light, etc.

Cheers! DZ

There is a company called Light Corporation in Grand Haven, Michigan USA that has a product called Intui that will do exactly what you are looking for. You can control any number of lights from any location that has internet access. Pre program your lighting needs or change them on the fly. There are a host of other things this product can to as well. Here is a link to their website and specifically to the product you are looking for.

Hope this helps.

Best regards.
