Thermal Insulation

12/31/2009 12:19 AM

Hi 2 all,

In thermal insulation system, what is the relation between the thermal conductivity and thickness selection. For example the requirement of K value for product piping is 0.03 W/m.K.and which is to be maintained 18 Deg.C. The middle east ambient temperature during winter will be 15 deg.C and in summer 45 deg.C. Can somebody advice the thickness and material selection to maintain the 18 Deg.C and 0.03 W/m.K.

Happy new year to you and your families

As there will always be some heat transfer between the contents of the pipe and the surroundings except when the two areas are the same temperature, the theoretical answer to the question is that the insulation thickness must be infinitely large.

Variations such as the length of the pipe, its location, existing local insulation standards, the diameter of the pipe, the flowrate and thermal capacity of the material within it, local weather patterns, local day length variation throughout the year, etc., etc., will defeat attempts to arrive at a theoretical answer for the ideal insulation thickness.

Most piping designers opt for best practice compatible with local standards.

Hi ,

In Thermal Insulation the lower the value of thermal conductivity of the Insulation material , the insulation effectiveness will be more . Prior to the design of Insulation Thickness you have to gather some data like. some of the data are missing in our query.

1. Pipe size.

2. Purpose of Insulation for ex , condensation control or heat flow limitation .

In your case i presume that u are looking out for condensation control as the operating temperature is below ambient .

In this case you can go for a Mineral wool pipe section with a outer facing like aluminium foil or kraft paper arrangement to prevent the moisture entrapement into the insulation material .The K value of this mineral wool is suitable in the range you have specified .

To determine the thickness it is mandatory to have the pipe size .

Regards

Earnest.
