Relocation of LPG Spheres

SA 516 Grade 70 were used for fabrication of LPG Horton sphere during 1980-81. It was designed as per BS 5500-1976 and design temperature was defined as (-) 6 to (+) 55 deg C.

At present design temperature requirement is stiplauted as (-) 27 to (+) 55 deg C. Whether Imapct test at subzero temperature is sufficient enough to declare the fitness of the sphere for relocation or some additonal metallurgical or mechanical tests are to required to be carried out in view of two times PWHT and 5 times hydrotesting to the sphere.

Considering the various amendments to SA516 Grade 70 since adoption is it necessary to check other physcial / mechanical parameters of spheres?

-27dC = -16.6dF is not terribly cold. If memory serves, ASME does not specify impact (Charpy) testing until below -20dF, but the Coast Guard crosses the line at 0dF. SA516-70 is a common choice for refrigeration vessels, and should easily be able to withstand such testing at your temperature range. My information on this is not current, and I don't know about other jurisdictions, so this is just a way to approach the question. With this in mind, you can research your own local requirements. I think (but don't absolutely know) that you will be okay.
