equation writing software

01/05/2010 10:14 PM

Has anyone used equation writing software that they would care to recommend? My expected use would be to put a couple of equations in text documents or emails. I have used "computer format" but it is hard to read in my opinion.

Thanks.

I am not sure what you mean by "computer format", but have you heard of/tried "Latex"? It is an open source type, but can be a little finicky to learn, but after the initial curve, is quite easy, for example:

\int_0^{\infty} \frac{1}{x} dx \approx ?

will display:

The above example is from this site, where you can also try it out.

Hey, thanks for the good answer

That encourages me to elaborate more -

The above "online" webpages should suit your needs if you just want to do the odd equation and cut and paste a gif or jpg into Word or an email.

But if you want an all in one text editor / word processor AND see your results in real time - I suggest any of these 3 free programs:

http://www.texniccenter.org/about/about-texniccenter

http://www.latexeditor.org/screenshots.html

http://www.bakoma-tex.com/menu/screenshots.php?img=texword-math.png

or if you want a commercial software (and the one I use) try:

Thanks for the second good answer

(because we all know that this is a competition - I have to post a ripsote to the posting on using MS Word's Equation Editor)

Microsoft SUCKS!!! You should at least go for another up and coming monopoly in the making . GOOGLE. Their free Google Docs also has an, ehem, basic editor

Google Docs (need Google account though)

(note that even the google geniuses have resorted to using the Latex type)

No worries (as my son would say). I only know what has worked for me. In college, I used MS equation editor extensively, and it worked well. That being said, there are many other aspects of MS that trouble and irritate me.

Although I don't have much use for writing equations anymore, I will still download LATEX and check it out.

Thanks guys & girls, I have several options to choose from, and probably more will follow.

I tried MS Word before, and it apparently is not now installed. Glad to know how to install it--thanks. It appeared to be a bit tedious to use, but will check it again.

By "computer format" I had in mind the one line way of putting calculations in computer programs: * for multiplication, ** for exponentiation, etc.

Hi Lehman57,

If you have MS Word, there is available an equation editor add-in. Go to Insert and select Object. Make sure the Create New tab is selected, and select Equation Editor from the dropdown box list. Click OK and you're on your way.

If you don't find Equation Editor in the dropdown box list, you will have to go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, find Microsoft Office, and select Change. From there, follow the prompts. Have your MS Office install disk ready.

I recently had to reinstall all my software and, lo and behold, mine is not installed - otherwise, I would have sent you a sample of its capabilities.

Hello

MathCad will be best for what you need. You can generate documents with equations of any sort in MathCad.

Not only you can generate document, but even you can solve the equations, make iterations and what not!

Obviously it costs.

There are a number of OpenSource solutions that work as well or better than MathCAD- ScilLab, Octave, to suggest a couple. But, if all you are wanting to do is insert equations in documents, this is pretty much overkill. You might also want to have a look at Mathcast. All of these can be found on Sourceforge.net.

I have used Mathcad extensively for math heavy reports for about twenty years.

I think it was ver 4 on floppies I started with. It has saved me hundreds of hours both in documents and in calculations.

I got ver 4 from university computer store. Best $40 spend, ever. Still use MathCad to do engineer calculations.

You might check out WordPerfect. My copy (OK, it's old) has a pretty good equation writer.

Or use MathCAD to write the equation then use a screen capture program to copy it to the clipboard. Unfortunately, since MathCAD was purchased, the new owners are not interested in customer convenience. The inexpensive version is no longer available.

Original Guest here.

These more recent suggestions got me looking and thinking more, and I stumbled across this free Latex/word processor which looks like it could be quite user friendly/useful:

Hi:

In the papers I wrote and published in the past I've used Open Office Writer an equivalent of MS Word its from Sun and it's free downloadable - its almost like Latex in generating the equations but less the hassle of the learning curve (not unless you are Linux driven anyway). Or if you are quite used with MS Office you can have a tool called MathType installed on it. Whether MS Word or Open Office the equations are written and treated as objects to be embedded on documents with figures, text, tables and graphs - quite good for student use or for academic use.

Hi

I see OpenOffice have a module called "formula" which produces exactly that, never used it, please tell me if it's any good.

Good Luck, Tony

Sun Microsystems has an exclusive software for this in their Open Office Suite, which is available for free download at:

There is an application called "Math" that is part of the Open Office suite, which is freeware. And if you're a Microsoft supporter, there should be a built-in application called equation editor. As one is writing a document, all they have to do is is a click on Insert - Object - Microsoft Equation.

"I have used "computer format" but it is hard to read in my opinion"

and here I thought it was the math that was hard to read... I always found basic or visual basic to really simplify the understanding of the equations.. but that is just me.. no mathematician here.. lol

Guys,

re Maths software

I am using Mathcad and it is fairly user friendly.

If you want something bigger, sassier, stronger than try Maple.
