Iter is ready!
Iter (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is an experimental (power plant type) fusion reactor that is to be built either in Japan or in France. Today, June 28, 2005, in Moscow the six sponsors of the reactor will meet to decide the location of the $10 billion structure. The six backers of Iter are: the United States, the Europeean Union, Japan, China, South Corea and Russia. After the design was finished some years ago, the sponsors have been weighting the question (for almost two years) of: what country will host the second largest global research and development collaboration (after the Space Station). Iter - the prototype of future fusion power plants - is expected to be in full operation by the year 2015. It will consist of a hydrogen plasma torus that will produce 500 Mw of electricity. The two possible sites are Cadarache in the South of France and Rokkasho-mura in Japan. The runner-up is France.
