It is widely employed in the US in both tool making shops and in production shops.

The sites previously posted are excellent references, but as an aside, laser marking is not a new tech of laser devices. New controls for beam behavior such as vectoring and time exposure for surfaces are only application changes, but really differentiates the user friendliness of lasers. Many laser operators have been marking their work with signatures against IP infringement and in the medical field the marking is a technique used for cosmetic enhancement such as in teeth whitening...oh well just some perspective for comment....:-)

Yes, what exactly about lasers are you interested in? Making a laser is actually fairly simple and has basic components, its just that the components are expensive and/or hard to come across. I might be able to answer any engineering questions you have regaurding lasers or how my college is using lasers to further progress society. What is it exactly you are wondering?
