Oil products removal before reparing

01/09/2010 10:13 AM

Dear All

As you know in petrochemical and refinery industry are used a lot of heat exchangers. Sometimes due tube leaks these exchangers need to be removed from the process unit to be repaired. Usual procedure say to be purged with steam before to start any mecanical activity for any exchanger to remove any carbon deposit. For sure this action take some days and a lot of steam, mean spent power.

Please suggest any alternative to inert the heat exchanger before to open it in safe condition.

Many thanks in advance

You can solvent reflux them with a low boiler(low bolint point hyadrcarbob). This will flush the innards and leave the low boiler, which is easier to strip with steam.

Most tanks farms have an excess of low pressure steam that can be used for this purpose.

Soak the closed heat exchangers in a dilute solution of emulifier or degreaser solution for few hours and clean with spray gun or compressed air to get rid of eased out carbon/ oil based deposits.
