Asphalt Embedded Strain Gauge

01/22/2007 11:35 AM

I am looking for an inexpensive strain gauge for embedment in hot mix asphalt pavement. Can any one help? Hot mix asphalt pavement is placed at >300 F and subjected to extreme pressures during compaction. How important is the gauge's transducer or the method by which deformation is transfered from the material to the gauge?

Dear Sir,

The Strain Gauge has to be placed after the asphalt has harderned and a groove has to be cut ( Narrower better) and then it has to be embedded

Thanks

You can bury strain gages in hot asphalt. Obviously the trick is not to bury them so deeply you limit the sensitivity. As to high temperatures,Omega manufactures many strain gages which would meet your requirements, especially those used in aircraft development. We used high temp strain gages on the wing leading edges of the Canadair (now Bombardier) Challenger CL 600 during certification flight testing. The anti ice system heated the leading edges with 300 degree F bleed air from the engines. We needed to measure the bending resistance and distortion produced by the rapid heating and cooling forces during actual flight conditions. These tests were conducted throughout the months of January and February in the Artic north of Canada. Failing to find snow in the warmest winter on record, the plane returned to Mojave California where it was greeted by freezing temperatures and 4 inches of snow. Once again validating Murphy's Law.
