Gasket selection for pressure Vessels and Tanks

01/11/2010 11:43 PM

Hello Friends,

Can anyone guide me on particular use of following gaskets? what is the selection criteria for different types of gaskets such as -

1) Spiral wound gaskets

2) Tanged insert type gaskets

3) Corrugated gaskets

Also how the filler material is selected?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there

The selection of gasket depends on the surface for machined surface and for the rough surface.

For machined you can get plain gasket where as for rough surface you can get a thick gasket or even rubber cord can help serve your purpose.

Your question is very broad, so to the last one first - the filler must be able to withstand the temperature of the product, must be chemically inert to the product and mechanically strong enough not to deform or extrude from whichever design of gasket you choose due to the pressure.

To make a choice between these types of gaskets you need to know the design of the joint, as some are better than others under certain conditions.

1) Good all round gasket. Can be fitted with inner or outer ring, made of various metals for rings and spirals, can have different fillers, suitable for large range of pressures and temperatures, is easy to handle and fit etc etc. Especially if they are fitted with outer ring, it is easy to do visual check of fitting.

2) Also good gasket, usually SS of some sort with different fillers, commonly garlon or graphite, can be damaged quite easily if badly handled, need greater skill/care when fitting and tightening, in other words they are less resistant to bad engineering/fitting practice than spiral wounds with rings.

3) Corrugated (I assume this is cam profile gasket) is usually teflon or graphite coated, very strong for very high pressure applications. They can often be refurbished by recoating and if required repair to the profile. They are expensive.

Friends,

Thanks a lot for your replies. Just one more query about the gaskets, how to select the gasket finish? when to use smooth finish and when to go for serrated type of finish?

Hi there

When the surface is machined one can easily use smooth surface finish gasket but if the surface is uneven unmachined prefer using serrated finish gasket.

CAF Gasket We can use it for general Purpose like water, air pipe line flanges. It will withstand the pressure up to 10 bar @ Normal atmospheric Temperature.

Metalic Gasket and Spiral wound Gaskets are used in Pressure Vessels and Pressure lines. According to the pressure rating the gasket shedule will differ.
