Hello Sir's,

i m really confused regarding , what is the difference between load break switch and circuit breaker ?

Re: ciruit breaker and load break switch

A circuit breaker "senses" overcurrent and shuts off automatically; a load break switch operates manually. However, a circuit breaker can usually be operated manually as well, thereby performing both functions. This overlap of functions can lead to imprecise language, hence the possibility of confusion.

Can anyone answere this:

I have an Electrical project here in Afghanistan, the client requirement is to use only the MOELLER company breakers, we've very less brands of MOELLER available here in our country.

The client requires to use main switches of MCCB, which is no availabe, Can i use LBS instead of MCCB, if Not WHY?

Thank you

Load Break Switch:

Can make, carry & break rated currents;

Can make, carry for a pre-determined duration and break over-load currents

Can make & carry for a pre-determined duration BUT NOT BREAK Short circuit currents (You definitely need a fuse to break short circuit currents)

Circuit Breaker:

Can make, carry & break normal, overload & short circuit currents; however, the duration of carry capacity for overload currents & short circuit currents will be specified by the standards/manufacturers

The function of both Circuit Breaker(CB) and Load break Switch (LBS) are same.

Normally " Load Break Switch" is a Manually or Automatically Operated Switch used to Break Medium and High Voltage High Current Circuits on load conditions and designed to quench the arc while breaking and making the circuit on load with out damage to the switching equipment.

Circuit Breakers are a big family of electrical switches used to make and break all types of electrical circuits with protection from overload, short circuit or earth fault . They are used in all voltages and current ratings. Depending up on their insulating medium and voltage ranges categorised as below.

Miniature Circuit Breakers ( MCB),Moulded Case Circuit Breakers( MCCB), Earth Leakage Circuit breakers (ELCB),Air Circuit Breakers (ACB),Oil Circuit Breakers (OCB), Minimum Oil Circuit Breakers (MOCCB), SF6 Breakers, Vacuum Circuit Breakers ( VCB)and many more.

Load Break Switch = mechanical device that you use to switch on & off a device.

A Circuit Breaker is a protection device used to open a circuit in the event of a overcurrent (fault)... Used to protect people or equipment from further damage.

load break switch is meant to cut off a circuit under load condition because of a problem, fault or isolation.Circuit breaker is also a switch meant to cut off a circuit under load because of a problem, fault or isolation. Both can be done manually and or automatically.

The two does same job,but it all depends on which one is best suitable for you and the cost.No break switch is applied to a circuit that is not meant to carry load, else why do you need to break the load or cut off the current?

Load-break switches are required to maintain the capability of interrupting the load current. The load break switch in a circuit with several hundred thousand volts, designed to carry a large amount of current without overheating the open position, having enough insulation to isolate the circuit in closed position, and equipped with arc interrupters to interrupt the load current. Pls check here for some references: http://www.ecvv.com/product_directory/Circuit-Breaker.html You can come to a conclusion by compare the major features with each other.

All of the above posts stating that the function is the same are technically WRONG.

A Load Break Switch is designed to ONLY interrupt a circuit under "normal" operating conditions. They are NOT or intended designed to interrupt fault current! Even if designed to automatically open (motorized), they must have fuses in the circuit to interrupt the fault first and the let-through current of the fuses must be coordinated to stay below the load interrupt rating of the LBS.

A circuit breaker is designed to interrupt fault current, and acts as an alternative to fuses. So a CB is both a LBS and a Fault Interrupter.
