Technicial Note on Casting

01/13/2010 2:30 AM

Notes:
Dimensions show critical to function-all others per electronic model
Typical draft:2.5°unless noted
Surface requirements:
Ejector pins:flush to recessed ,15 of any surface
Flash to be trimmed flush to ,13 with casting surface
Parting line mismatch: ,13 max

i really have no idea of the notes in bold and can anyone kindly help me on these three technicial notes?

To get cast parts out of the mold, the side surfaces can't be parallel; that's what the drift angle is all about, as may be observed by inspecting a few.

The ,xx dimensions (note the comma) suggest that those are in mm. Thus: ejector pins flush to 0.15 mm below surface, flash trimmed to within 0.13 mm from surface, parting line mismatch 0.13 mm max. Leaving off the leading zeros was tacky, no matter whether US or European; the difference between periods and commas is mere convention.

Sincerely yours--Editor Crankshaft

I assume it is injection molded part

Ejector pins:flush to recessed ,15 of any surface
The ejector pins depresson must not exceed 0.15 (unit?) below surface and should neither project out)

Flash to be trimmed flush to ,13 with casting surface

The flash should be trimmed (cut/ground,... depend on the material of the product) such that it is not projecting beyond 0.13 (U?) from the finished product surface. The flash are the unwanted metal projections (in layers) - looks like ridges on the surface of casting ,

Parting line mismatch: ,13 max

The mismatch on the parting - where the two parts of the mold/pattern are joined - should not be more than 0.13. The pattern are made by joining several small parts and then these are assembled together to form the final pattern. The mismathches where these join should be less than 0.13.

If you look here the first two show the flash and the mismatch (core shift)

It seems everybody is typing here...

It does not necessarilly has to be about plastic injection moulding. It can be a casting with metallic tools.

If the guy follows the specs and the specs were done correctly (as it seems...), the part could even pop-out of the mould upon cooling. If not, the extraction pins would do the job. It clearly refers to an automated process...
