Using a 1200 rpm Fluid Coupling with a 600 rpm Motor

01/14/2010 1:02 PM

Hello, my question is about the use of a fluid coupling. We have one that was used on a 300hp 1200rpm motor to drive a huge drum debarker. We want to use the same coupling but drive it with a 300hp 600rpm motor. That is 50% less rpm and I am not sure if the coupler will fully lock up. Am I asking for trouble or could it work at the lower rpm's?

Thank you,

David Cassano

All else being the same, If you keep the same HP and half the RPM, the torque from the motor is doubled.

I would be very surprised if the fluid coupling would like that at all. Not only are you driving it at a RPM much lower, you are also asking it to handle much more torque. Try to get the input/output characteristics of the coupling from the manufacturer.

Typical full lock up speed on a fluid coupling is at 10% rated speed . . . however this can be a signficant variable depending on the fluid charge in the coupling.

If it is a hydrodynamic coupling then it is a pair consisting of a pump and of a turbine.

The torque is proportional to n^2 so that dividing the speed by 2 the torque will be reduced to 1/4. Since for same power at half speed the torque doubles your coupling will only transmit 1/8 of the motor torque.
