Prototype Hinge/Lifting Mechanism

01/23/2007 1:27 PM

I am in need of a hinge. or a hydraulic system which will unseal and open a hatch cover by first lifting the hatch cover approximately 2 inches and then lifting it to a perpendicular position. The hatch is approximately 30 inches by 36 inches and weighs approximately 30 pounds. The hatch has double compound convex curve, and the curves are approximately, from side to side and front to back, approximately 1 1 /2 inches.

The hinge only system could use a gas spring, which I have.

A hydraulic system which would serve as a hinge and lifter would be preferred.

Thanks

David James

If you place the hinge pivot point in front of the hatch, the hatch will lift as you start to open it. This is similar to the way that european kitchen cabinet hinges work, they use a lever system to create a virtual pivot point in front of the door so that it moves forward as it opens.

Aircraft hatches would have much the same requirements. So why not use one of those mechanisms ? I mean the hatches covering the undercarrages etc.

gas spring have been used for opening hatches (including for car) for generation, why you want to used a hydraulic? Is it require remote control? if so you may try insert a spring inside the hydraulic cylinder to make it open 2 in first and use oil to fully open the hatches. just my $0.02 word
