1992 Ford Thunder bird SC with ABS Break booster or Master Cylinder?

1992 Ford Thunder bird Super Coup 6cyl 3.8L, Automatic, has ABS.

I am having break issues with my Thunder bird. The breaks are hard to press and hard to stop. The break lights do come on when the break pedal is pressed. 1 Mechanic told me it was my Master Cylinder, another told me it was my Break Booster. I have tried to find these parts every where. I have looked for rebuild kits, used parts and new parts. Ford tells me that these parts are listed as vintage parts and they can no longer get them. Why...Why would you discontinue a part that is necessary for the operation of a vehicle with out making a replacement part.

Any way Back to my Question.

How do I tell if its the Hydro-booster(I think thats how it is spelled) or the Master Cylinder that is giving me the trouble?

"The break lights do come on when the break pedal is pressed"??? Do you mean the dash brake "trouble" light or the lights on the back of the car?

It's probably the booster. There's probably a leak in the diaphragm, so you have manual brakes with no power assist. Master cylinders usually leak past the seals and wouldn't have much effect on pedal pressure, until it hits the floor.

Manufacturers are under no obligation to produce spare parts for old cars.

Craigslist/E-Bay? Find junker and cannibalize it?

Ok sorry, The dash light stays on, and I know they are under No Obligation. Just think its stupid. Anyway. I don't know much of anything about cars. Just don't want to be taken advantage of just because I am a girl and I don't know much about them. I know not everyone does, but it has happened to me more than once. Just doing some research before I spend the money on it. Thank you for replying back to me and for the help. I am new to this Discussion Group as-well. Not sure how it all works yet. I am a fast learner though. Thanks again.

Hi Melissa,

Welcome to CR4. CR just means Conference Room. You know, where things get talked about.

Most boosters are basically the same thing with subtle differences in hook-up and capacity.

I'd expect a competent mechanic could adapt a new/rebuilt/recycled booster from another application to fit this car.

Try this. It may not help, but if you have a helper, it'll be free.

With car in Park, parking brake on, hood open, start car.

Have person with best hearing listen to the booster under the hood for any noise while the deaf person applies the service brakes. (steps on the brakes momentarily) If you hear a hiss very likely you have a bad booster. A short piece of garden hose can be used as a hearing aid, much like a stethoscope.

BE CAREFUL WHENEVER WORKING UNDER THE HOOD OF A RUNNING VEHICLE.

You know nothing about cars, but want to repair the brakes (note my correct spelling by the way!)?????

You should take it to a repair shop or see if you have a good friend who does have some idea of how to repair car systems.....ask him for help.

Check out this website for what might happen if you "repair" it yourself!!

I NEVER STATED THAT I WAS GOING TO TRY AND REPAIR THE BRAKES MYSELF.(Note the caps lock button was pressed for dramatic effect) 2).I simply asked HOW TO TELL if it was a booster issue or Master Cylinder issue! 3).The next time you choose to critique someones spelling I hope you get paid for it. I understand that you have lonely weekends and are probably looking for any kind of human conversation. They have dating sites for people like you. I suggest www.match.com , www.eHarmony.com , or even www.directoryofdating.com These sites might suit you better.(You can even put in your application that you want your potentials to be perfect in every way) They might find someone for you, yes even you! Again I would suggest you try those. You might get lucky. Just Might! And yes I did misspell BRAKES, but apparently you can NOT read or DIDN'T Read the whole thing. Otherwise you wouldn't think that I was going to try to fix this issue myself. This was a used car that I purchased, and I was asking for information that might help in making sure that the "repair shop" knows what they are doing as well. All too often repair shops "fix things" that do not need fixing. Not all of them do, but some are known to. I do not want to be sold a part or charged for parts and service that I do not need. So "GUEST" Go find you some human interaction,(not virtual, there is a difference by the way) and let those of us who have a general interest in this thread continue to discuss the situation, misspellings and all. Yes, you can't spell either.....!! Remember please that we have internation members who sometimes have problems with reading blogs with incorrect spelling, think about them, not just yourself...

I am assuming that English (American?) is your primary language, learn it better if you do not wish to open yourself to correction on that point, its the only way!!

I tried to register, was not able. Anyway I'm having the same problem with my 1992 ford thunderbird. Is there a way to disconect the ABS so I can have normal breaking power, instead of fighting it to stop. Thanks in advance for any help. The ABS system on your car was called the TEVES MkII which was an all integrated system. What that means to us is that our system contains all the controlling hydraulic components into one unit called the Hydraulic Actuator Assembly. The Ford service manual has over 100 pgs. dealing just with the diagnosing and trobleshooting of the ABS system so anything involving this system is very expensive to have worked on and is not something that the average shop has the ability to work on much less repair.

I examined the FORD Electrical & Vacuum Troubleshooting Manual for the 89 through 92 model years. The electrical system for the ABS System was virtually identical between all model years. Lets describe what happens to power this system.

When the ignition key is placed into the start or run position, power is applied to a portion of the ABS Control Module (Electronic Controller) via the 10A CLUSTER Fuse. The ABS Control Module applies power to the Anti-Lock Power Relay when the Ignition Switch is placed into the START Position. This relay closes it's contacts allowing power to flow from the ABS MOD 30A Fuse in the Primary Distribution Box (inside the engine compartment) to the rest of the ABS Control Module. This relay is a "seal-in relay" in that it continues to be closed even when the Ignition Switch is released to the run position. The purpose for this relay is that it allows a relatively large amperage load to be powered but not directly from the ignition switch. This way up to 30A of power can be supplied to the system without relying on the contacts in the ignition switch to do it. After the system is energized it performs a self test. If you place your ignition switch to the run position without starting the car you can watch this test being run. This self test will check electrical continuity of the system as well as the Electronic Controller for proper operation. The Amber Anti-Lock light will illuminate for approximately 4 seconds and then extinguish if all is well with your system. If you then place the switch to the start position and start your car you should see the following cycling of lights. The Amber Anti-Lock and Red Brake Light should illuminate. The Hydraulic Pump Motor most likely will run since the pressure sensed by the Pressure Switch in the system is probably low (below 2030 PSI)if the car has been sitting a while. The Pressure Switch will allow power from the ANTI LOCK 10A Fuse to cause the Hydraulic Pump Motor Relay to close it's contacts allowing power to flow to the pump motor from the ABS MTR 40 A fuse. It will also cause the Anti-Lock Warning Light to be illuminated. The pump running will pressurize the hydraulic accumulator to around 2650 PSI at which point the pressure switch contacts will open, the Hydraulic Pump Motor Relay will drop out and the pump will stop as well as the red and amber lights will extinguish. For all applicable model years the Anti-Lock Power Relay and the Hydraulic Pump Motor Relay are located on the passenger side firewall area. When facing the engine bay these relays are located as follows:

92 Model Year (Left to Right) Hydraulic Pump Motor Relay, Anti-Lock Power Relay, WOT AC Cutout Relay.

Note: This information based on diagrams in the Ford EVTM's for the appropriate year. If it is wrong, blame FORD not me.

The CLUSTER and ANTI LOCK fuses are located in the Primary Junction Box in the passenger compartment and the ABS MOD and ABS MTR fuses in the Power Distribution Box in the engine compartment.

Basic Troubleshooting

Most of the problems associated with this system seem to revolve around the electrical operation of the Hydraulic Pump Motor and the Accumulator. So lets describe what some of the common symptoms are and what you can do about it.

Hard pedal Amber Anti Lock and Red Brake Light always on.

  • The hard pedal is indication of no power assist which we now knows means the Accumulator is not pressurized or the hydraulic pump is not running to pressurize the system. You should also realize that you don't have ANY rear brakes too. Run the Self Test and see the Amber Warning Light goes out in 4 seconds. Have an assistant stand by the open hood to listen for the Hydraulic Pump Motor to run when you start the car.
  • If the pump runs, most likely you have a bad Accumulator or the pump is not being supplied with fluid because sediment has plugged the low pressure hose leading from the reservoir. Check the hose is unplugged and if that doesn't correct the problem replace the Accumulator. If this doesn't fix your problem you are into a high buck Pump Assembly replacement. (You already replaced the Accumulator so don't buy another one now). For reference you should be able to press on the brake pedal from 5-8 times without the Hydraulic Pump Motor running. If this is not that case you are due for an Accumulator soon.
  • If the pump does not run you now most likely have an external electrical problem although it is possible the pump motor is shot. Here is how to tell what is what. With the Ignition Switch off depress the brake pedal 20 times to ensure the system is fully depressurized. Turn the Ignition Switch to Run the pump should run. If not disconnect the 4 pin connector on the pump. Use a multi meter to measure the voltage on the pins of the harness connector. The two positive pins are on opposite side of the connector as are the negative pins. Measure from one positive to one negative pin. (See figure 3).You should measure more than `10V DC. If you don't, potential problems include either the Hydraulic Pump Motor Relay, The Pressure Switch or the wiring harness between them all.

The failure of the Hydraulic Pump Motor Relay is a common occurrence. The normal failure modes are the contacts welded themselves shut causing the Hydraulic Pump Motor to run continuous or the relay failing to close which prevents normal pump motor operation. To verify relay operation it would be possible to disconnect the harness connector to the Anti-Lock Pressure Switch and ground pin 4 of the connector to ground.(See Figure 5) This will complete the circuit for the coil of the Hydraulic Pump Motor Relay and should cause the pump to turn on. If the pump does not run most likely the relay is bad and must be replaced. If the motor does run the Pressure Switch may be the faulty part and should be replaced. The FORD Shop Manual states that if the Pressure Switch is replaced the Hydraulic Pump Motor Relay should be replaced as well.

Anti-Lock Warning Light and Red Brake Light come on after brakes applied.

  • Most likely this is indication of a weak or bad Accumulator. If you have this symptom it is important to fix it as soon as you can because you are cycling the Hydraulic Pump Motor unnecessarily which will cause this high buck part to fail sooner than it needs to.

Red Brake Light comes on when accelerating or braking or going around a corner hard.

  • Probably your brake fluid level is a tad low. Angles and dangles on the car are causing it to pick up the level sensor. Make sure your system is pressurized when you check / add fluid since the Accumulator will "store" an appreciable amount of fluid. This will cause the level to go down as the system is pressurized at start up. Where did the fluid go you might ask? Assuming you have no leaks it probably is as a result of the brake pads in your calipers wearing. As they wear more fluid is required to keep the caliper pistons maintained in the proper position for braking action.

Other Problems that might be troubleshot by the DIY

Just like the EEC the ABS System has a Test Connector which may be used to download error codes from the ABS Electronic Controller. It is located on the right rear quarter panel trunk area. The types of codes present here will be basic system faults which will cause the Amber Anti-Lock Warning Light to remain lit even after 4 seconds have elapsed on the Self-Test. As far as I know, any aftermarket Code Reader that is compatible with the FORD EEC System can be used to access these signals. Two things to be aware of though. One, if the first code received is in the 20's, service the indicated fault. No other codes can be outputted to the code reader if a 20's fault exists. After servicing the 20's code repeat getting codes from the Electronic Controller. Two, the memory can be cleared only by reading all codes present, all faults being corrected (anti-lock warning light off) and the vehicle being driven above 25 MPH.

The troubleshooting techniques used for these type of problems are more involved than what is commonly used, but I have included the Service Codes for those of you that are more adventurous. I have tried to give a short summary of what checks are made but if it is not something obvious you are going to have to get the manual or visit a dealer unfortunately. I included this to give you a direction to look for the obvious rather than becoming an ABS Expert Troubleshooter. There are other checks detailed in each Pin Point Check Section other than what I am listing.

If you come up with Wheel Sensor Codes make sure to check the indicator rings for missing teeth or other damage. It is also important to maintain proper gap between the sensor and the rings. Although this is not adjustable, faulty wheel bearings which allow the wheel to "float" axially too far can be a source of problems.

NAPA does not list any master cylinder related parts for this car with ABS, except the brake light switch. Follow Jspeop's my posting as far as working through your problem. If you can follow his my directions carefully, and can use a test light or multimeter to test for 12 volts of power, you can fix this. You have an emerging classic car. Don't give up on it. It is a complex system, but that system is composed of components that are basic, and simple to repair. Good luck.

Good stuff. However, most ABS failures are due to lack of fluid changes. (every two years/40,000 miles). Brake fluid adsorbs a tremendous amount of water relative to its' volume and distributes it throughout the hydraulic system. Because there are many dissimilar metals in the system an inordinate amount of corrosion occurs among and between components. The modulator or actuator pistons in the control unit tend to stick and cause the solenoids to burn out.

Symptoms point to the brake booster. I assume the engine performs OK, which would probably preclude a vacuum leak.

I would suggest reviewing something like Hemmings Motor News to see if you can find a supplier, or someone who could rebuild yours.

Vacuum will have nothing to do with the brake booster as it is electro-hydraulic booster.

Thank you for clarifying that detail. Considering the OP did not spell "Brakes" correctly, I would surmise that your extensive and detailed response will be beyond the OP's capabilities to employ.

A far better suggestion would be for the OP to take the vehicle to a skilled service operator such as yourself.

Wow, I love how just because I misused the word BREAKES in stead of using BRAKES, that some of you think I am a complete and total idiot. Its a typo for goodness sake. I do have a general understanding of what is going on. No I am not a mechanic, no I will not be trying to fix this myself. Just wanted to know what some of you thought about the situation so that I am not blind sighted and told to purchase parts and pay for services that are not needed. I did not know I needed to worry about the spelling, Well I did spell it correctly by the way, just used the wrong word for this situation. This was my first Thread to post on here and will probably be my last! For those of you that were more interested in helping with what was wrong with my car and NOT what was wrong with my wording, thank you, you were a help to me. All others good luck in your efforts on being perfect...just a helpful insight...the last guy that was PERFECT was crucified! Just sayn'

Don't be so quick to bail on us. There are some very good knowledge people here that force you to 1) Think, 2) Laugh, 3) Go crazy. Try to ignore the few that just post to here themselves.

As a final word of advice on your T-Bird. DO NOT allow some one to try to talk you into converting to a vacuum booster setup. The turbo engine will not always have vacuum for the booster, and will leave you with no assist under some conditions. That is the reason that Ford went to the Hydro-Boost system. Good luck.

Well Bob,

I do appreciate the help. I plan on keeping this car as original as possible. It is my first car. As it will be an awesome classic. I love the pick up it has when it is accelerated. Just would love for it to stop too. It only has maybe 2 or 3 pea sized rust spots, and a few scuffs on it. I didn't pay that much for it; so I am willing to spend the money I saved on buying the parts I need to get it back right. And thank you for the advice on the people in here. lol I am just frustrated I guess. Anyway Thank you.

I'm having the same problem with my 1992 ford thunderbird. Is there a way to disconect the ABS system so my car will break the way it's supposed to, instead of fighting it to stop. Thanks in advance for any help.

herman1, if you'll read bob c's comments through this thread, you will probably not be able to do that. It would seem the system needs to be completely wired and plumbed, and operating properly to have braking on your vehicle. Any shortcuts or attempts to bypass any of the systems could lead to major issues, including liability in the event of an accident or other incident, which could be blamed on braking system modifications.

There are many pages to the book of "My brakes don't work".

If your power assist is not working, AND you have the hydro-boost system, you have an unsafe vehicle, and need it repaired as soon as possible. Consider towing it to the repair facility. The hydro-boost system was only installed on the turbocharged versions as far as I know. One thing that might be causing your problem is the power steering belt loose or missing. That is something that you can check along with the PS fluid level. I am not sure if Ford used this as a power supply for their hydro-boost systems or not.

If you have a standard vacuum booster system, you still have a safety issue, but there are some additional things you can do. Check for vacuum at the power booster. There should be a strong vacuum signal when the check valve is pulled away from the booster. Further testing should be done to assure that the vacuum line going to the check valve is not clogged or restricted in flow. You can do this by removing the check valve from the hose. At that point the car should want to die from the large vacuum leak. If the engine does not stall, it may speed up over 2,000 rpm. If you do not get these results, follow the vacuum line back to the intake manifold, and remove at that location. If you still do not get the desired results, shut the engine off, and clean out that port on the intake manifold. This is a common problem as engines get older and the amount of oil sludge starts to build up. After cleaning the port out, restate the car with everything reconnected, and see if the power assist has returned. If none of these things returned your power assist, you will probably need a replacement booster.

If on the other hand, your complaint is that your ABS braking system is behaving badly, know this. The ABS system is designed to return your vehicle to a standard power brake system in the event of a failure of any of the ABS electrical components. In other words, if you did not have power to the ABS system, the car would perform exactly the same as a similar vehicle that did not have ABS. Anything that would cause a non ABS vehicle to have braking problems would also cause an ABS vehicle the same problems. Bad brake hoses, leaking brake lines, leaking axle seals, etc. all will cause bad breaking performance. And many of these problems will cause the ABS light to come on.

I do not know what problem you are having with YOUR car. Just because it is also a 92 T-Bird, does not mean that it is the exact same problem as the OP.

Just an FYI, Try not to use your car until this issue is fixed. If the brake fluid spills (over flows) it can catch fire.
