induction hardening depth

In a round(dia 30) steel(like EN8/EN32)rod there is a groove. Groove wall thickness is only 7mm. Hence i want to maintain induction hardening depth from 1.5 to 1.8mm only. Is it possible. please explain.

a Better description of what you mean by groove wall thickness is only 7 mm in a 30 mm round will be needed before we can figure out what you are trying to do.if the groove is on the surface, then it will not be a fixed "wall thickness."It will vary in thickness by depth. And please also tell us the radius or fillet at the bottom of the groove so we can estimate chances of product cracking in this process. WHAT IS DEPTH OF GROOVE? milo

Agree with Milo. You were not clear in your description. However, answering in a really preliminar manner, yes, it is perfectly possible to produce a induction-hardened depth as stated. Induction treatment is specially usefull in these cases, because the power source can be controlled much better than the heating in furnaces or by flame. Also, the partial material transformation tends to give you benefic compression tensions in the surface as a result. I don't think you will end with a bottom-of-the-groove hardened surface, but, do you need it there? Are you sure?
