Generator Harmonics

01/16/2010 10:46 PM

Will third harmonics present in the generator supply increase the generator winding temperature significantly. What is the pole pitch of the generator winding with 108 slots, 8 pole and a coil throw of 0 to 11?

Yes, the Third Harmonics will be present substantially @ 29 % current Harmonics, in case the stator winding is of Full Pitch or 5/8th Pitch.

Because of this Harmonics the Harmonic Current will flow through the Main Stator Winding in addition to the Load Current, Hence the Main Stator Winding Temp Rise will Increase.

We have been taught in the college days that the 3 rd Harmonics are eliminated by star connection of the generator winding, and 5th Harmonics is of magnitude of 1/5^2 which is qual to 4 Percent and reduced by SHORT PITCHING OF WINDING to the required LEVEL OF CONTROL.

There was some thread on this matter and I do not remember when it appeared, It can be searched out in CR4 LINK. Thehttp://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/49265/How-to-convert-m3-hr-into-Nm3-hr?frmtrk=CR4digest CR4 MEMBERS may also comment on this point.

In my reply I have intended to convey that " SOME TIME BACK THERE WAS A REFERENCE ABOUT THIS HARMONICS MATTER AND I DO NOT REMEMBER THE CR4 LINK/PATH AND I DO NOT REMEMBER THE DATE. OTHER CR4 MEMBERS CAN ALSO COMMENT ON THIS."

BUT TO MY SURPRISE SOME OTHER LINK - is found in my comment/reply. How it happened is not known to me.

Some CR4 MEMBER might have had a similar experience and advise how to avoid this.

Thanks,
