Wire Schematic for Garrett Ground Hog ADS Metal Detector

01/17/2010 6:57 PM

Hey guys, I need some help with a Garrett Ground hog metal detector that was given to me because it wasn't working. After opening it up, I found a red wire from the battery tray came loose from the on/off switch, I'm not sure which terminal the wire goes to on the switch? The switch is double pole stacked on a potentiometer. Someone before me had globed some solder on one terminal of the switch. I also noticed the C/B for the battery tray shows signs of over heating at the solder joints for the batteries and the board terminal connections. I'm hoping someone might have access to the wiring schematic, I've looked all over the internet, checked for previous CR4 threads and Garrett is tight lipped about their wiring schematics. I would like to find the proper home for the red wire before I do a smoke check on it.

Can you post a few close-up pictures (switch side and rear and attached wiring), that should be enough to answer your question without the need for drawings.

If there is a terminal with solder on it and now wire - that's the one.

I wish is was that simple, all 4 terminals have solder on them, 3 look like factory, 1 with a blob of solder and something is or was causing the battery(s) circuit board to over heat. Blob of solder= the right terminal?

Here's some pic's of what I'm working on, I could really use the schematics for this. The other components look ok at this point. These are the best pic's I got for now.

I see what looks like added tags to the pics but cannot read what they say (teensy lettering). In the right side pic there is a larger gauge red wire that is the issue.

Think that I do see pcb discoloration and what you were referring to. Did the unit have rechargeable batteries? If so, it could have been due to bad cells or a defective charger over-charging and cooking them.

Perhaps you need to take new photos that are in focus. That would help.

The standard form of a double pole switch comprises the following; a normally open terminal, anormally closed terminal and a commom terminal. The loose red wire comming from the battery should be connectedto the common terminal of the double pole switch.

The hot sign on the C/B could have being as a result of reverse polarity by the former repair man or the real owner.

use a test light close to volt of battery put one wire from light on red wire turn swich on touch outher wire from light to post you think it goes on light should come on and the detecter should come on but not as strong as norm go to next step if just light come on and bright its not it try agin on this step

if it pass last step turn off and touch same one light should not come on and detector should not come on if light does come on start over on first step if all pass you may use that post good luck

From Tim Hawley Master Mech.

The red wire most of the time is connected to one of the outer pins. If you look at the terminals with a magnify glass you will see the terminal with solder and broken wire strands. Removing the solder may help to discover which pin has strands but no wire connected.

Option: You can connect Garrett for an instruction manual which gives a wire schematic in the back of the manual for a small fee. Or try to find a schematic with the model and serial number of your unit and search under Sam's Photofacts on the internet.

Good Luck

Red wire we know goes for live or positive in battery. Why not try using the red wire to touch the terminals of the switch and or supply input point and see if u could make something out of it.

I sell a fair amount of equipment to companies who had a technician use the technique described in posts 10 and 11.

As often as not, what happens is the release of the magic smoke that makes it work. The capture and reintroduction of the smoke can usually be accomplished with 4.5 grams of Pixie Dust... The price of this Pixie Dust varies with the price of replacement equipment!

I see in original post that dj95401 is familiar with this technique as well...

Andy Germany in post 12 has the most reasonable answer, and a link.

And you are so right Doorman, education always comes with a price. Been there and done that one. Thanks for being observant to the smoke test, something I'm trying to avoid!

Turn the switch on and touch the red wire to the different posts, until the unit comes on. No rocket science here.

Good Luck!

You need to go to a metal detecting forum like this one and ask there I feel.

Someone there will have the same detector, or know someone who does.

search on the web for similar forums, ask the same question and post the fotos (a little bit sharper than the ones you posted recently!).

Surely thats why you post here to get a few extra ideas?

did you fix wiring problem yet with ground hog metal detector ? If not, I have one and the wire you mentioned (red) on mine goes to the black wire across from the terminal with blue wire. As there are two black wires one with a brown wire and the other has the red wire connected to it. Across from the brown an black wire connection is terminal with just brown wire. And the other black wire has red wire connected with it and the blue wire is across from these two. hope this helps.?

Thanks for the info. I put it on the back burner for awhile, but I'll dig it out, and now that the weather is getting better, gives me more incentive to finish it!

This is way too cool!! Thanks Again, Dan

Ok, I did not take the time to read ever post and I know this is 11 years later but just in case, on your pot, you can see two black wires with resistors on them, one has the brown wire attached to one pole with a black wire, the red wire goes to the other black wire. just solder the red onto the single black wire and your done.
