Steam Turbine is Hunting

01/18/2010 3:07 AM

Dear All,

My question is related to Hunting at Steam Turbine. We have A small Turbine manufacture by Dresser-Rand Model is RLHB19, Power 132KW, Governor Woodward Model TG-17.

When we start the turbine and before it reached to operating speed which is 1790rpm, it will start hunting at 1750rpm then we start close the valve slowly then hunting will stop. Unfortunately I don't have much experience in Turbine Governor and I seek your support to share with me your experience to solve this issue.

Thanks in Advance,

SEE THE MANUAL OF YOUR TURBINE,,,,,IF 1750RPM IS CRITICAL SPEED OF YOUR TURBINE THEN ITS OK. BECAUSE IN ALL TURBINES THERE IS A CRITICAL SPEED AND VIBRATION IS HIGH AT SUCH SPEED. ONCE YOUR TURBINE PASSED THROUGH CRITICAL SPEED ITS VIBRATION REDUCE TO NORMAL VALUE. SO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO IS THAT 'NEVER STAY AT CRITICAL SPEED, JUST PASS THROUGH IT' IJAZ AHMAD

Yes, checking the manual is the best to get the right values.

Locate the 'Droop Adjusting lever' and make the adjustment as recommended. The important point here is: The adjustment should be done very carefully and very minimally every time. Increasing the droop too much would cause heavy surging and if the load is less, might trip on over speed. It could be better that way, rather having an accident on high speed. So test the 'Over Speed Trip Test' on solo run, before adjusting the droop on load.

Dear Yesyen,

We used to decouple the Turbine and it was run to operating speed, as result the respond of turbine was perfect no hunting was occurred! that means only with load, hunting will occurred! What does that mean?

Now Governor will be flashed with light oil then will be fill with new oil..if you have any suggestion let me know please..

apprecite every body feedback..

Droop adjustment will reduce the hunting. You can adjust the droop on load, but taking enough care and precautions. One important precaution, I suggested, was to conduct 'over speed trip test' (in decoupled condition).

We have 2*38.5 MW coal based steam turbines, both always runs at 25 MW individually, Auxiliary consumption 5 MW and inter connection cement plant 9 MW and export to GRID is 36 MW Whenever grid disturbance occurred the grid circuit breaker opening and plant came to home load at TG-1: 3.5 MW and TG-2: 5.8 MW after that points are noted as bellow 1. TG-1 load rapidly dropped to 0 MW and Generator tripping on reverse power protection.( if we are in alert position TG-1 breaker manually opens while load dropping condition and saves from Turbine trip) 2. Whenever TG-1 load dropping, TG-2 load raising rapidly. 3. TG-2 withstanding home load at 9.5 MW ( 5 MW power plant auxiliary and 6.5 MW Cement Plant auxiliary ) 4. after getting clearance from GRID, going synchronised 5. Before Close the Breaker we observed following parameters TG-2 active power : 9.5 MW Reactive power : 2.1 MW Power factor :0.987 Lag Voltage : 11.25 KV ( matched with Grid voltage) Frequency : 49.99 to 49.98 ( matched with Grid Frequency) after getting Synch permit we are closing breaker then immediately Load was hunting from 13.5 MW to 1 MW here we are observed turbine actuator Hunting rapidly. and unable observed frequency of the Generator and Speed of Turbine

Even if it is a diesel engine or the steam turbine, the governor control module is doing the job of keeping the engine /turbine speed constant by varying the fuel/steem supply under variable load conditios. In this case the turbine RPM is hunting due to distrubbed setting on the gain control and stebility control pots which are required to be set till the hunting stops. The gain and stebility controls are the integral parts of Governor control modules. Also the body of governor control module to be earthed for its safe and efficient function.

Dear,

The above mentioned problem I have faced recently in one of our turbine. When sensitivity of governor is high and governor valve travel required is very low to meet out your load, governor try to respond quickly to control to your set speed and it will create hunting. To ,solve this problem try to increase governor droop setting step by step which will decrease sensitivity slightly but hunting will be reduced. This is my experience and it can be adjusted at site or test stand.Procedure given in TG governor maintenance catalogue.Any how you have to get permission from your higher official to do adjustment. This is my suggestion only.

We have seen turbines and gas and diesel engines hunt when there has been some binding of moving components in the governor mechanism. One case was a bad bearing on a tractor and another was galling of components on a steam turbine. If everything moves smoothly look elsewhere.

Dear Mr.Fahad,

Did you try to increase the SLUGGISHNESS OF THE GOVERNOR, slightly.

If not please try and you may succeed and come out of your problem.

Thanks,
