Thread connection of Pressure gauge in high pressure

01/18/2010 8:51 PM

Dear friends,

This is YTAhn. I am working in offshore industry. I have questioned from End-user(Clients) that direct mounting with thread connection of pressure gauges shall not be used in high pressure wiht vibration area. Do we have alternatives?

I need your helps!!!

You might consider a flange mount gauge if that would satisfy your "clients". Not knowing your ranges I can't be more specific but you could take a quick look at Dwyer Instruments. They have a helpful selection matrix and a good variety. At least it's a place to start. Good luck!

Welded valves is better, but you can seal the oulet treads by welding.

If line or equipment vibration is the issue then your clients have a valid concern because your instruments especially those such as bourdon gauges (with small moving parts and linkages) will not last very long.

An easy to implement solution is to remote mount the gauge i.e. on a stanchion or bracketed off some part of the structure, and use stainless steel tubing or high pressure hose, ofcourse with the tubing there will still be some vibration impacted on the installation but not nearly as much. The other more expensive solution and probably less practical depending on the stage of your project is to reorder your gauges with remote seal and capillary, ofcourse the selection process will need to be reviewed and datasheets updated etc.

Go for remote mounting for the gauge with an impulse tube to connect to the process tapping point. Follow the Client's requirements for:

  • Gauge point isolation valve location - functionality and access
  • Water loops for steam service
  • Insulation for high temperature impulse tube operation
  • Impulse tube routing
  • Compatibility of materials: process/valve/impulse tube/gauge wetted parts
  • etc.
