This will depend on the material to be welded and the size.

The pipe should be cut square, inserted into the fitting, and then withdrawn about 1/16 inch (1.5 mm). Otherwise, the welding process may jam the pipe end into the bottom of the socket, which would add stress to the joint.

The leg dimension of the 45° fillet should equal the full thickness of the socket. This will dictate how many weld passes are required. The finished fillet surface should be flat or slightly convex, but not concave.

Sorry if that's a bit vague, but it's the best one-size-fits-all description I could think of.

Want to add perfection to your answer: use "Gap-A-Let" socket weld contraction ring instead of withdrawing 1/16" (measuring equipment and ring is manufactured and supplied by G.A.L. Gage Co., P.O.Box 23, Stevensville, Michigan 49127. This would solve the whole problem regarding quality control.

That sounds like a good invention. Are they made in various materials so that compatibility with the fluid can be ensured?

Yes! it is a good invention. They are made from stainless steel. I was introduced to it since las 15 years. G.A.L. also produce different type of tool to measure weld gas, misalignment in pipe-to-fitting joints, fillet weld leg and throat etc.
